2018 Florida Elections
A general election was held in the U.S. state of Florida on November 6, 2018. All of Florida's executive officers were up for election as well as Florida's Class I United States Senate, Senate seat and all 27 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Partisan primary, Primary elections were on August 28, 2018. The Republicans 2018 United States Senate election in Florida, took control of the U.S. Senate seat held by three-term Democrat Bill Nelson in an upset, while the Democrats picked up two House seats as well as the office of the Commissioner of Agriculture. The Republican gains in the state, despite the 2018 United States elections, trend towards Democrats nationwide, were part of Florida's transition from a swing state to a Red states and blue states, red state. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen ( ; ; born July 15, 1952) is an American politician and lobbyist from Miami, Florida, who represented from 1989 to 2019. By the end of her tenure, she was the most senior U.S. Representative from Florida. She was Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 2011–2013. In 1989, Ros-Lehtinen won a special election and became the first Cuban American elected to Congress. She was also the first Republican woman elected to the House from Florida. Ros-Lehtinen gave the first Republican response to the State of the Union address in Spanish in 2011, and gave the third in 2014. In September 2011, Ros-Lehtinen became the first Republican member of the U.S. Congress to co-sponsor the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act.
