Football In Turkey
Football is the most popular sport in Turkey, followed by basketball, tracing its roots to the Ottoman Empire. The first matches were played in Ottoman Salonica in 1875. The sport was introduced by English residents. The Turkish football league system comprises five professional leagues, one of which is dedicated to female athletes. History League system Süper Lig The Süper Lig (Super League) is the top division in Turkey since 1959. There are 18 clubs in the league (as of 2025–26 season). The league ushered in clubs from all over Turkey to compete with each other. Currently, clubs finishing in the top four places in the league enter qualifying rounds of European competitions, and the winners of the Turkish Cup, if not one of the top four, are also given a spot. Each season, the four teams with the least points are relegated to the TFF First League. The 1986–87 season of the European Cup Winners' Cup was won by Ajax in the final against Lokomotive Leipzig. Melih Gökçek
İbrahim Melih Gökçek (; born 20 October 1948) is a Turkish politician who served as the mayor of Ankara from 1994 to 2017. From 1991 to 1994, he was an MP. Gökçek has won municipal elections in 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, and was controversially also declared the winner in 2014. He is a member of the governing AK Party. Background and personal life Gökçek was born at Keçiören. Umut Bulut (, born 15 March 1983) is a Turkish former professional Association football, footballer. Between 2007 and 2018, he made 39 appearances and scored ten goals for the Turkey national football team, Turkey national team. On 24.07.2024, Umut Bulut ended his football career at the age of 41.
