Events * May 31 – Jaume Plensa's concrete sculpture ''Dream (sculpture), Dream'' is unveiled at a former colliery site in Sutton, St Helens, England. * September 9 – Herning Museum of Contemporary Art, Denmark, new building designed by American architect Steven Holl, opens. * September 24 – René Magritte's painting ''Olympia'' (a nude portrait of his wife) is stolen from the museum at his former home, rue Esseghem 135 in Brussels, by two armed men. Luigi Russolo
Luigi Carlo Filippo Russolo (30 April 1885 – 4 February 1947) was an Italian Futurist painter, composer, builder of experimental musical instruments, and the author of the manifesto '' The Art of Noises'' (1913). Russolo completed his secondary education at Seminary of Portograuro in 1901, after which he moved to Milan and began gaining interest in the arts. He is often regarded as one of the first noise music experimental composers with his performances of ''noise music concerts'' in 1913–14 and then again after World War I, notably in Paris in 1921. He designed and constructed a number of noise-generating devices called Intonarumori. Biography Luigi Russolo was perhaps the first noise artist. His 1913 manifesto, '' L'Arte dei Rumori (The Art of Noises)'', stated that the industrial revolution had given modern men a greater capacity to appreciate more complex sounds. Musée Cantini
The Musée Cantini is a museum in Marseille that has been open to the public since 1936. The museum specializes in modern art, especially paintings from the first half of the twentieth century. The building The musée Cantini building was built in 1694 for the Compagnie du Cap Nègre, specializing in coral fishing on the northern coasts of Tunisia and in the trade of wool, wax and leather. The company ran into financial difficulties and the building was sold in 1709 to Dominique de Montgrand great-grandfather of Jean-Baptiste-Jacques-Guy-Thérèse de Montgrand, future Mayor of Marseille. The building was then sold to Louis Joseph Chaudoin in 1801, and to Dieudonné Bernadac in 1816. In 1888, it was acquired by Jules Cantini who bequeathed it to the City of Marseille in 1916, with the stipulation that it was to become a museum of decorative arts. The museum was opened in 1936. Les Choristes
''Les Choristes'' ("The Chorus" or "The Chorus Singers") is an 1877 pastel on monotyping, monotype by French artist Edgar Degas. Part of a series of similar works depicting daily public entertainment at the time, it shows a group of singers performing a scene from the opera ''Don Giovanni'', the only work by Degas depicting an operatic performance without dancers. ''Les Choristes'', and other contemporary works of the artist such as ''Café-Concert at Les Ambassadeurs'', show the influence of French caricature, caricaturists of the era. Honoré Daumier is often invoked, but critics and art history, art historians have identified others. Critics at the time praised it, with one suggesting that the singers' "hideous" faces made them seem more real.
