2000 was designated as the International Year for the Culture of Peace and the World Mathematics, Mathematical Year. Popular culture holds the year 2000 as the first year of the 21st century and the 3rd millennium, because of a tendency to group the years according to decimal values, as if non-existent year zero was counted. According to the Gregorian calendar, these distinctions fall to the year 2001, because the 1st century was retroactively said to start with the year AD 1. Since the Gregorian calendar does not have year zero, its first millennium spanned from years 1 to 1000 inclusively and its second millennium from years 1001 to 2000. The 2000 Faber Grand Prix was a women's tennis tournament played on indoor hardcourts in Hannover, Germany that was part of Tier II of the 2000 WTA Tour. It was the eighth and last edition of the tournament and was held from 14 February until 20 February 2000. First-seeded Serena Williams won the singles title and earned $87,000 first-prize money. Harry Blum (politician)
Harry Blum (18. October 1944 in Lennestadt- Elspe, Sauerland; died 17. March 2000 in Cologne) was a German politician and member of the CDU. On 1. October 1999 he became the first directly elected mayor of Cologne, but he only held that office for six months when he died suddenly in March 2000. Background and earlier life Harry Blum was born ''Johannes Jacob Blum'' into an Old Colognian family, but the family was evacuated during the war. He received his Abitur at Dreikönigsgymnasium and studied law at the University of Cologne. Blum joined the Christian Democratic Union in 1964 and was a member of the city council since 1984. Alfred Schwarzmann
Alfred Schwarzmann (22 March 1912 – 11 March 2000) was a German Olympic gymnast. He won three gold and two bronze medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics and another silver medal at the 1952 Summer Olympics. During World War II, Schwarzmann served in the Wehrmacht and was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross of Nazi Germany. Career Alfred Schwarzmann joined the 13th Company of the Nuremberg Infantry Regiment on 1 April 1935 after signing up for a twelve-year period of service. He was promoted to Unteroffizier on 1 May 1935 and was a member of the Gymnastics team preparing for the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he won three gold and two bronze medals. On 10 May 1940 Schwarzmann and his company parachuted into the Netherlands and took a key bridge at Moerdijk. In the first hour of the fighting Schwarzmann was badly wounded when a bullet pierced a lung. He was treated for his wounds in Dordrecht after the Dutch capitulation. Fritz Thiedemann
Fritz Thiedemann (; 3 March 1918 – 8 January 2000) was a German equestrian, considered to be one of the greatest show jumpers of his time. Biography Thiedemann was born as the son of a farmer. His riding talents became clear at a young age, but he could not display them internationally until after World War II. During the war, Theidemann commanded a cavalry unit and was captured and interned at a Russian prison camp by war's end. At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Thiedemann won medals in two equestrian disciplines, a feat since unequalled. He placed third in the dressage team event, and won another bronze medal in the individual jumping contest with his favourite horse ''Meteor'', with which he would win all major prizes in his career. Klaus Wennemann
Klaus Wennemann (18 December 1940 – 7 January 2000) was a German television and film actor. Wenneman was born in Oer-Erkenschwick, North Rhine-Westphalia. He is perhaps best known for his leading roles as the Chief Engineer, (the LI), in ''Das Boot'', and as Faber in the TV series '' Der Fahnder''. As an actor, he appeared in nine movies, and ten television series. He died in Bad Aibling, Bavaria, at the age of 59, from lung cancer. He was married to the same woman from 1963 until his death; they had two sons together. Wennemann was good friends with fellow actor Jürgen Prochnow. Diether Krebs (11 August 1947 – 4 January 2000) was a German actor, cabaret artist and comedian. Life and career Youth and initial success Diether Krebs was born on 11 August 1947 in Essen, the son of a stationery shop owner. His godfather was Diether Posser, a lawyer, SPD politician and erstwhile Minister for Justice and Finance for North Rhine-Westphalia. Krebs gained his first experience in the theatre at school at the Humboldt '' Gymnasium'' in Essen. He took acting lessons at the renowned "Folkwangschule" school of performing arts in the Ruhrgebiet and took on his first role at the theatre in Oberhausen, followed by some small film roles. Of these, his most noteworthy appearance was in the film '' Zoff'' (1971) in which he played alongside well-known actors such as Jürgen Prochnow and Claus Theo Gärtner. Sophia Flörsch (; born 1 December 2000) is a Germans, German racing driver who last competed in 2025 Indy NXT, Indy NXT with HMD Motorsports.
