Layla Al-Attar
Layla Al-Attar (; May 7, 1944 – June 27, 1993) was an Iraqi artist and painter who became the Director of the Iraqi National Art Museum. Through her art, al-Attar expressed ideals that attempted to recognize the importance of women in all spheres of society. She said of her work, "I am trying to bring into the society the role of women, the dignity of their existence, and their humanity by means of lines blended with waves of color, sincere feelings, and true wishes ..." Life and career Al-Attar graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1965, and was among the first female graduates from that program. She became the Director of the Center for National Art (now the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art), a post she held until her death in 1993. Khairallah Talfah
Khairallah Talfah ( ; 1910 – 20 April 1993) was an Iraqi military officer, politician, and author. He was the maternal uncle and father-in-law of Saddam Hussein. He was the father of Saddam's first wife Sajida Talfah and of Iraqi defense minister Adnan Khairallah. Under the Saddam regime, Talfah served as governor of Baghdad from 1979 to 1981, when he was removed from his position on charges of corruption. Born in the village of Al-Awja near Tikrit, many of Talfah's family members were Arab nationalists who opposed the Ottoman Empire. Talfah himself would also adopt the ideology against British rule in Iraq, eventually participating in the 1941 coup d'état, which brought the anti-British Rashid Ali al-Gaylani to power with aid from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. A series of demonstrations, marches, sit-ins and civil disobedience took place in Iraq from 2019 until 2021. It started on 1October 2019, a date which was set by civil activists on social media, spreading mainly over the central and southern provinces of Iraq, to protest corruption, high unemployment, political sectarianism, inefficient public services and foreign interventionism. Protests spread quickly, coordinated over social media, to other provinces in Iraq. Safaa Al Sarai
Safaa Al Sarai (; 28 June 1993 – 28 October 2019) was an Iraqi activist who has been called the icon of the Iraqi tishreen protests. Background He was born into a family from Baghdad that lived in the Sha'ab neighborhood. He graduated from high school to enroll in the University of Technology, and during his school years he worked as a porter in a market in the Jamila commercial district. His father died early in his life, then his mother died from cancer in 2017. He later graduated as a programmer from the department of computer science at the University of Technology.
