The 1988–89 season was the 92nd season of competitive football in Scotland. Notable events Rangers regained their league title and retained the League Cup, but defeat by Celtic in the Scottish Cup final ended their hopes of a domestic treble. Graeme Souness's acquisition of English players continued with the signing of Norwich City striker Kevin Drinkell and Everton defender Gary Stevens. For the title run-in, he also signed defender Mel Sterland from Sheffield Wednesday, only to sell him to Leeds United in the close season. Alex Ferguson
Sir Alexander Chapman Ferguson (born 31 December 1941) is a Scottish former professional football manager and player, best known for managing Manchester United from 1986 to 2013. Ian Porterfield
John Ian Porterfield (11 February 1946 – 11 September 2007) was a Scottish professional footballer, and an experienced football coach who worked at both club and international level for almost 30 years. At the time of his death, he was the coach of the Armenia national football team. As a player, Porterfield scored the only goal of the 1973 FA Cup Final as Sunderland memorably overcame the odds to beat Leeds United. He was the first manager to be sacked in the FA Premier League era, when he was fired by Chelsea. He had earlier succeeded Alex Ferguson as manager of Aberdeen in 1986. Jocky Scott
John Alexander Scott (born 14 January 1948) is a Scottish football coach and former player. During his playing career he played for Dundee, Aberdeen, Seattle Sounders and Scotland. An extensive management career followed with spells at Aberdeen, Dundee (three separate spells), Arbroath, Dunfermline Athletic, Notts County, Raith Rovers and Stirling Albion. He also had coaching jobs at other various clubs in both Scotland and England. Club career Scott played club football for Dundee and Aberdeen, winning the Scottish League Cup with both clubs. He memorably scored a hat-trick when Aberdeen beat Rangers 5–1 in the competition's semi-final in October 1976. He was capped twice for the Scotland national team in 1971. Alex Smith MBE (born 25 December 1939) is a Scottish former football player and manager. His major achievements over close to five decades as a manager include winning the Scottish Cup in 1987 with St Mirren and 1990 with Aberdeen, where he also won the Scottish League Cup in 1989. He also won league titles with Stirling Albion and Clyde. He managed the Scotland under-18, under-21 and under-23 teams. He had a role in the development of many prominent players, and the 2005 book on Scottish football, ''The Final Whistle?'' was described as "the nearest thing the Scottish game has to a father figure".
