1988 Vuelta A España
The 1988 Vuelta a España was the 43rd Edition Vuelta a España, taking place from 25 April to 15 May 1988. It was a bicycle race which consisted of 20 stages over , ridden at an average speed of . Sean Kelly started the race as the principal favourite after performance in the 1987 Vuelta a España in which he was leading the General classification with several days remaining in the race when he was forced to withdraw due to injury. Luis "Lucho" Herrera returned to defend his title while 1985 Vuelta winner Pedro Delgado had decided to ride the 1988 Giro d'Italia in preparation for the 1988 Tour de France. The BH team directed by Javier Mínguez, presented solid opposition with the strong climbers Álvaro Pino (winner of the 1986 Vuelta a España) and Anselmo Fuerte. Sean Kelly (cyclist)
John James 'Sean' Kelly (born 24 May 1956) is an Irish former professional road bicycle racer, one of the most successful road cyclists of the 1980s, and one of the finest Classic cycle races, Classics riders of all time. From becoming a professional in 1977 until his retirement in 1994, he won 193 professional races, including nine Cycling monument, Monument Classics, Paris–Nice a record seven years consecutively and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. Kelly won one Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four Points classification in the Tour de France, green jerseys in the Tour de France. 1987 Tour De France
The 1987 Tour de France was the 74th edition of the Tour de France, taking place from 1 to 26 July. It consisted of 25 stages over . It was the closest three-way finish in the Tour until the 2007 Tour de France, among the closest overall races in Tour history and the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place riders each wore the Yellow jersey at some point during the race. It was won by Stephen Roche, the first and so far only Irishman to do so. The winner of the 1986 Tour de France, Greg LeMond was unable to defend his title following a shooting accident in April. Following Stage 1, Poland's Lech Piasecki became the first rider from the Eastern Bloc to lead the Tour de France. He was one of eight different men to wear yellow, a new record for the Tour. Mathieu Hermans (born 9 January 1963 in Goirle) is a Dutch former professional road bicycle racer. Mathieu Hermans was the Lanterne rouge of the Tour de France twice, in 1987 and 1989. Badajoz
Badajoz is the capital of the Province of Badajoz in the autonomous communities of Spain, autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. Team Time Trial
A team time trial (TTT) is a road bicycle race in which teams of cyclists race against the clock (see individual time trial for a more detailed description of ITT events). The winning team in a TTT is determined by the comparing the times of (usually) the fourth-finishing rider in each team (though the relevant finish position can be otherwise specified in advance by the race organisers). This means that each team will try to get their first four (at least) riders across the finish line in a tight group: it is actually a disadvantage for any rider to finish far in advance of the fourth rider, as by staying back a faster rider can help the fourth rider to get a quicker time. Where a TTT is part of a stage race, it is necessary for each rider to be given a finish time that can be cumulated into the general classification timings. Iñaki Gastón Crespo (born 25 May 1963, in Bilbao) is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer. Career During Gastón's first race as a professional the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana he won stage 2b taking his first professional victory. In the 1986 Clásica de San Sebastián Gastón made it to the line with Marino Lejarreta who he then beat in the sprint to win the race. He is one of two Basque riders to ever win the race. Gastón won the 1990 Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme beating Tony Rominger by six seconds. For the final year of his career his team merged with to form for the 1994 season. Post-Cycling Retiring from cycling after the 1994 season Gastón became a Pharmaceutical salesman. He plans to work until he is 60 then he will retire from work all together.
