Burke's Peerage Limited is a British genealogical publisher founded in 1826, when the Irish genealogist John Burke began releasing books devoted to the ancestry and heraldry of the peerage, baronetage, knightage and landed gentry of Great Britain and Ireland. His first publication, a ''Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Peerage and Baronetage of the United Kingdom'', was updated sporadically until 1847, when the company began releasing new editions every year as ''Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage'' (often shortened to just ''Burke's Peerage''). Other books followed, including ''Burke's Landed Gentry'', ''Burke's Colonial Gentry'', and ''Burke's General Armory''. Patrick Anson, 5th Earl Of Lichfield
Thomas Patrick John Anson, 5th Earl of Lichfield (25 April 1939 – 11 November 2005) was an English photographer from the Anson family. He inherited the Earldom of Lichfield in 1960 from his paternal grandfather. In his professional practice he was known as Patrick Lichfield. Hugh John Massingberd (30 December 1946 – 25 December 2007), originally Hugh John Montgomery and known from 1963 to 1992 as Hugh Montgomery-Massingberd, was an English journalist and genealogist. Peter Townend (editor)
Kenneth Peter Townend (26 April 1921 - 16 July 2001) was a British genealogist and social editor. He served as editor of Burke's Peerage and later as social editor of ''Tatler''. Early life and education Townend was born in Leeds on 26 April 1921, son of Claude William Townend, a farmer and Army riding instructor, and Florence Lily, née Atkinson. As a child, he suffered from meningitis, which meant he had little formal education, but did attend King's School, Pontefract. His mother "keenly followed the doings of the Royal Family and aristocracy", and her son was surrounded by society magazines from an early age. Career Townend served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War as a writer/ clerk, and afterwards joined Burke's Peerage under L. G. Pine as an archivist. Alfred Trego Butler MVO, MC, FSA, FASG (8 October 1880 – 22 December 1946) was a genealogist and officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. Early and personal life Alfred Butler was born in 1880 as the second son of Robert Frederick Butler of Lynford Gardens, Hampstead. In 1905, he married Grace Blunt, daughter of Mr. J. Arthur Charles Fox-Davies
Arthur Charles Fox-Davies (28 February 1871 – 19 May 1928) was a British expert on heraldry. His ''Complete Guide to Heraldry'', published in 1909, has become a standard work on heraldry in England. A barrister by profession, Fox-Davies worked on several notable cases involving the peerage, and also worked as a journalist and novelist. The Garter Principal King of Arms (also Garter King of Arms or simply Garter) is the senior King of Arms, and the senior Officer of Arms of the College of Arms, the heraldic authority with jurisdiction over England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The position has existed since 1415. Garter is responsible to the Earl Marshal for the running of the college. Sir Henry Farnham Burke, (1859–1930) was a long-serving Anglo-Irish officer of arms at the College of Arms in London. Biography A son of Sir Bernard Burke (who was Ulster King of Arms from 1853 until his death in 1892), Henry Burke was appointed Rouge Croix Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary in 1880.
