Brazilian Research Ship Almirante Maximiano
''Almirante Maximiano'' (H-41) is an ice-strengthened oceanographic research ship of the Brazilian Navy. The ship bears this name in honor of Admiral Maximiano Eduardo da Silva Fonseca. It was built by the Todd Pacific Shipyards of Seattle, Washington, and was launched on 13 February 1974. It was acquired by the Brazilian Navy on 3 September 2008 for the Brazilian Antarctic Program. Prior to Brazilian service, the ship served commercial operations under the names ''Ocean Empress'', ''Naeraberg'', ''American Empress'', ''Maureen Sea'', ''Scotoil I'' and ''Theriot Offshore I''. Vigor Shipyards
Vigor Shipyards is the current entity operating the former Todd Shipyards after its acquisition in 2011. Todd Shipyards was founded in 1916, which owned and operated shipyards on the West Coast of the United States, East Coast of the United States and the Gulf. Todd Shipyards were a major part of the Emergency Shipbuilding Program for World War II. Vigor Shipyards In February 2011, Vigor Industrial purchased Todd for US$130 million. This included the Seattle, Everett and Bremerton operations. Today, Vigor Shipyards is a government repair subsidiary of Vigor Industrial. Maritime call signs are call signs assigned as unique identifiers to ships and boats. All radio transmissions must be individually identified by the call sign. Merchant and naval vessels are assigned call signs by their national licensing authorities. Ice Class
Ice class refers to a notation assigned by a classification society or a national authority to denote the additional level of strengthening as well as other arrangements that enable a ship to navigate through sea ice. The Brazilian Antarctic Program ( pt, Programa Antártico Brasileiro; PROANTAR) is a program of the Brazilian Navy which has presence in the continent of Antarctica.
