Belgioioso, Lombardy
Belgioioso or Belgiojoso (; lmo, Belgios or ) is a town and ''comune'' in the Province of Pavia, region of Lombardy (northern Italy), with a population of 6,233 (2017). It is 12 km east of the city of Pavia, between the Olona River and the Po River. Due to its geographical location, Belgioioso has become one of the southern suburbs of the city of Milan. Belgioioso is noted for its medieval castle, the seat of the Belgioioso family. Francis I of France was held there after the Battle of Pavia. BelGioioso Cheese Inc. is a cheese manufacturer in Wisconsin. BelGioioso Cheese currently operates eight manufacturing facilities, each plant making particular cheeses that are manufactured, aged, finished, packaged, and shipped from the facility. History The company was founded in 1979 by Errico Auricchio, whose great-grandfather was a cheese manufacturer in Italy. Auricchio started the company in Denmark, Wisconsin, where he produced his first cheese, provolone, in a rented cheese plant in Wrightstown, Wisconsin Wrightstown is a village in Brown and Outagamie counties in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Giovan Giacomo Barbiano di Belgioioso or Belgiojoso (1565–1626) was an Italian commander in Habsburg service in the Low Countries and the Kingdom of Hungary. Life Belgioioso was born in 1565 to Lodovico Barbiano and Barbara Trivulzio. His brother Alberico married Ippolita Borromeo, sister of Carlo Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan. In 1584 Belgioioso went to the Low Countries to join the Army of Flanders with the express purpose of fighting against the enemies of the Catholic Faith. He briefly served Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, but then returned to Flanders. Ludovico Luigi Carlo Maria di Barbiano di Belgiojoso or Ludwig Karl Maria von Barbiano Graf von Belgiojoso (2 January 1728 – 15 May 1801, Milan) was an Austrian diplomat and Lieutenant Field Marshal who served the Habsburg monarchy in the second half of the 18th century. Life Ludovico di Belgiojoso was born in Belgioioso as the second son of Count Don Antonio Barbiano di Belgioioso (1693–1779) and his wife Barbara Luigia Elisabetta D'Adda, contessa di Bronno (1707–1769). The medieval castle of Belgioioso, a town located just south of Milan, had been the seat of the Belgiojoso family for centuries. Belgioioso was part of the Duchy of Milan which itself formed a part of the Holy Roman Empire at that time. Ludovico's father Count Antonio had served the Habsburg empress Maria Theresa throughout his career as Imperial ambassador and since 1748 as Imperial Personal Councillor.
