The Basketball National League (BNL) is the pre-eminent male professional basketball league in South Africa. The league was founded in 2013, however, before the Premier Basketball League had been running as the country's premier basketball league. The league also has a female counterpart, the Women's Basketball National League, which was established in 2021. Egoli Magic are the most successful club in league history, having won five championships. History PBL era Founded in 1994 as the Premier Basketball League (PBL), the league was founded by six franchises. In an agreement with the national federation Basketball South Africa, the league began with four new teams, namely Capetown Eagles, Soweto Panthers, Capetown Kings and Pretoria Suns. The leaguge was sponsored by Allied Bank, and later by Telkom. The PBL was disbanded in 1996. The PBL disappeared for the following years, but made a return after nine years in 2007. Cape Town Tigers
The Cape Town Tigers are a South African professional basketball team founded in Cape Town. The Tigers have played in the Basketball National League (BNL) and played in three seasons of the Basketball Africa League (BAL) between 2022 and 2024. Established in 2019, the Tigers are based in Gugulethu, and have won the South African national championship three times, and qualified for the BAL through the Road to BAL three times. Limpopo
Limpopo () is the northernmost Provinces of South Africa, province of South Africa. It is named after the Limpopo River, which forms the province's western and northern borders. Inner City Super League
The Inner City Super League (ICSL) is a South African semi-professional basketball league for men's and women's teams in Greater Johannesburg, as well as other places in Gauteng. It was founded in 2013 and most of the teams participating are based in the Gauteng province. The league has two men's division, one women's division as well as a junior division. The league was founded by players from the Braamfontein Blues. Each season usually runs from February to May. In the men's category, Jozi Nuggets and the Braamfontein Blues are the most successful teams with three titles each. Phoenix is the most decorated women's team with four league titles. MBB Basketball
Made by Ball Blue Soldiers, commonly known as MBB or MBB Blue Soldiers, is a South African basketball team based in Johannesburg. The team plays in the Basketball National League (BNL), the highest level of basketball in the country, following their promotion in 2024. They have won one National Championship title in 2024. They made their debut in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) in the 2025 season. History The team was founded as a social club in 2010 by a group of players who had moved from KwaZulu-Natal to Johannesburg, Gauteng.
