Burundi Women's National Football Team
The Burundi women's national football team, nicknamed the Swallows (French: ''Hirondelles''), represents Burundi in women's international football competitions. The team has competed since 2016 in matches recognised by FIFA, the sport's international governing body. A senior national team has been continually inactive, but an under-20 team has played in numerous matches. Further development of football in the country faces challenges found across Africa, including inequality and limited access to education for women. A women's football programme did not exist in Burundi until 2000, and only 455 players had registered for participation on the national level by 2006. Nyamata
Nyamata is a town in the Bugesera District, southeastern Rwanda. Nyamata literally means "place of milk" from the two Kinyarwanda words "nya-" (of) and "amata" (milk). Lydia Nsekera (born 20 April 1967) is a Burundian sports official who has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since 2009. Career Football administration Nsekera was president of the Football Federation of Burundi between 2004 and 2013. In 2012 she was the first woman to be co-opted onto the FIFA Council for one year and in 2013 gained election for a full four-year term, also the first woman to achieve this. She served through till 2021, when she lost her bid to represent Africa on the council for the third time after serving on the council for 8 years. The 2019 CECAFA Women's Championship was the fourth edition of the association football tournament for women's national teams in the East African region. The 10th All-Africa Games took place between September 3–18, 2011 in Maputo, Mozambique. Maputo's hosting marked the third time the Games was held in the southern part of the continent.
