Broadstairs and St Peter's is a civil parish in the Thanet district of Kent, England. The parish comprises the settlements of Broadstairs, St Peter's and Westwood, including Westwood Cross. It is a successor parish, created in 1974 to replace Broadstairs and St Peter's Urban District. It is governed by Broadstairs and St Peter's Town Council. Broadstairs
Broadstairs () is a coastal town on the Isle of Thanet in the Thanet district of east Kent, England, about east of London. It is part of the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, which includes St Peter's, and had a population in 2011 of about 25,000. Situated between Margate and Ramsgate, Broadstairs is one of Thanet's seaside resorts, known as the "jewel in Thanet's crown". The town's coat of arms' Latin motto is ''Stella Maris'' (" Star of the Sea"). The name derives from a former flight of steps in the chalk cliff, which led from the sands up to the 11th-century shrine of St Mary on the cliff's summit. St Peter's, Kent
St Peter's is an area of Broadstairs, in the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's, on the Isle of Thanet, in Kent, England. Historically a village, it was outgrown by the long-dominant settlement of the two, Broadstairs, after 1841. Originally the borough or manor of the church of St. Peter-in-Thanet, it was said to be the largest parish east of London, at least until Broadstairs became a separate parish on 27 September 1850. The two settlements were formally merged administratively in 1895. History The village and its church, named after Saint Peter, was the second daughter church of Minster established in 1070, although the first written record of its present name dates to 1124. In 1254 the village was named "scī Petr'", which gradually changed to "scī Petri" by 1270, Sti Petri in Insula de Thaneto by 1422, and finally settling by 1610 on its current form of St Peter's. Westwood, Kent
Westwood is a village and retail estate in Thanet district of Kent, England, and south of Margate. History Westwood developed on the road between Margate and Ramsgate (now designated the A254). Most of the village is in the civil parish of Broadstairs and St Peter's. Haine Hospital opened as an isolation hospital in 1902. A 2015 car park collapse beneath the Westwood Cross Primark store revealed underground tunnels believed to have been constructed during World War I training exercises. Researchers suggested they were subsequently used as air raid shelters for servicemen at the hospital and then sealed up. The village became a focus for retail development towards the end of the 20th century, and is now one of four designated Town Centres in Thanet. Westwood Cross
Westwood Cross is an open, pedestrianised shopping centre located at Westwood, Kent, England. It opened in 2005, and since 2008 has incorporated a casino, bowling alley cinema and bingo hall. History Westwood Cross is situated on the site of the former Haine Hospital, which closed in June 1997 and was demolished in 2003. Construction required filling of a deep railway cutting. Developers claimed that Westwood Cross created 1,500 jobs in the Broadstairs area. Kent County Council's decision to allow a 2008 expansion including leisure and gambling facilities was controversial.
