Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is an American Thoroughbred horse race for two-year-old horses, run on a grass course at a distance of one mile. It is part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships, the ''de facto'' year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing. All Breeders' Cups to date have been conducted in the United States, with the exception of the 1996 event in Canada. The race was run for the first time in 2007 during the first day of the expanded Breeders' Cup at host track, Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. The race received Grade II status in 2009. The American Graded Stakes Committee further upgraded the race to Grade I status for 2011. Automatic Berths Beginning in 2007, the Breeders' Cup developed the Breeders' Cup Challenge, a series of "Win and You're In" races that allot automatic qualifying bids to winners of defined races. Nownownow (foaled April 20, 2005 in Kentucky) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the inaugural running of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in 2007. Background Owned and bred by French clothing retailer Fabien Ouaki through his Fab Oak Stable, Nownownow was sired by Ouaki's Grade 1 winner Whywhywhy, a descendant of the American Champion sire, Mr. Prospector. Donativum is a British thoroughbred racehorse and winner of the 2008 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Background Donativum was a grey gelding bred in the United Kingdom by the Stratford Place Stud. He was one of the best horses sired by the sprinter Cadeaux Genereux. As a yearling in October 1997 Donativum (then described as a "chestnut colt") was put up for auction at Tattersalls and bought for 120,000 guineas by John Ferguson Bloodstock on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed. Racing career 2008: two-year-old season As a juvenile, Donativum was beaten in maiden races on his first two starts and then finished seventh in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Soldat (foaled April 19, 2008 in Kentucky) is a dark bay or brown colt by the sire War Front out of a Coronado’s Quest mare, Le Relais., and one of the contenders for the 2011 Kentucky Derby. Racing career Soldat, meaning "soldier" in French, moved to the forefront of the Kentucky Derby scene after his dominating two-length victory in the Fountain of Youth Stakes G2 on Feb 26, 2011. The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I Thoroughbred horse races, operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982. From its inception in 1984 through 2006, it was a single-day event; starting in 2007, it expanded to two days. All sites have been in the United States, except in 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada.
