Boss SD-1
The SD-1 Super Overdrive is the second overdrive pedal made by the Boss Corporation. Released in 1981, and produced continuously since, the SD-1 was an update to the brand's groundbreaking List of distortion pedals#Boss OD-1 Overdrive, OD-1 Overdrive, adding a tone control and refining its predecessor's circuit for slightly more gain and aggression in its voicing. The changes made the SD-1 especially popular within the growing hard rock and Heavy metal music, heavy metal subgenres upon its release, with guitarists frequently using it to boost already-overdriven amplifiers like the Marshall JCM800 into even higher-gain sounds. The SD-1's design has remained unchanged since its debut, and it remains a Guitar pedalboard, pedalboard staple among both amateur and professional players. History Following the releases of the MXR Distortion+ and List of distortion pedals#DOD Overdrive 250 Preamp, DOD Overdrive 250 Preamp, both of which combined newly-available op amps with hard-clippin ...

Klon Centaur
The Klon Centaur is an overdrive pedal made by the American engineer Bill Finnegan between 1994 and 2008. Finnegan aimed to create a pedal that would recreate the harmonically rich distortion of a guitar amplifier at a high volume. Finnegan struggled to meet demand, and used units sold for inflated prices. He made around 8,000 units before discontinuing the Klon in 2008. In 2014, Finnegan redesigned it as the Klon KTR, which is simpler to manufacture by contracted firms. Numerous manufacturers have created Klon clones. As of 2024, used Klon Centaurs sold for up to $20,000 USD. Development In the 1990s, the American engineer Bill Finnegan sought an overdrive pedal that would recreate the harmonically rich distortion of a guitar amplifier at a high volume. He wanted a "big, open" sound, with a "hint of tube clipping", that would not sound like a pedal was being used. He experimented with the Ibanez Tube Screamer, but was not satisfied. With electrical engineer friends, inc ...

King Of Tone
The King of Tone is an overdrive pedal manufactured by boutique electric guitar effects pedal maker Mike Piera and his company Analog Man. Released in 2005, the King of Tone is a modified version of the then-discontinued Marshall Bluesbreaker pedal. Among guitarists, the King of Tone has gained "near-mythical" status, with a famously years-long waiting list and prices on the used market greatly exceeding the cost of a new pedal. To meet demand, Piera launched a simplified, lower-cost version, the Prince of Tone, as well as collaborated with the brand MXR on a mini-format, mass-produced version, the Duke of Tone. History In 1991, Marshall released its "Bluesbreaker" overdrive, an attempt to recreate, in pedal format, the tone of the brand's famous Bluesbreaker amplifier. While later regarded as a classic overdrive circuit, the Bluesbreaker pedal was limited in its gain and tonal range and failed to sell well, with its discontinuation coming the following year.
