Booleroo Steam
Booleroo Centre is a town in the southern Flinders Ranges region of South Australia. The town is located in the Mount Remarkable District Council local government area, north of the state capital, Adelaide. At the 2006 census, Booleroo Centre had a population of 516. History In 1853 a pastoral lease was taken out by partners William Spence Peter and George Elder who then pioneered a sheep station which they named the Booleroo run. The name was derived from a local Aboriginal word. Sources vary on its meaning with suggestions including "plenty" or "soft mud". In 1856 W.S. Peter, who also owned Gum Creek Station near Hallett, became a brother in law to George Charles Hawker of Bungaree and Anama Stations. George Elder was a brother of Alex Elder, founder of Elders Limited. On 28 February 1861 the Booleroo run was profitably auctioned when W.S. Electoral District Of Stuart
Stuart is a single-member Electoral districts of South Australia, electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. At 323,131 km², it is a vast country district extending from the Spencer Gulf as far as the Northern Territory border in the north and the Queensland and New South Wales borders in the east. The district includes pastoral lease and unincorporated Crown Lands, Lake Eyre and part of the Simpson Desert in the far north. Hundred Of Booleroo
The Hundred of Booleroo is a cadastral hundred of the County of Frome in South Australia, centred on the eponymous township of Booleroo Centre. It was proclaimed by Governor Anthony Musgrave in 1875 and named for an indigenous term ''bulyeroo'' or ''bulyaroo'', thought to mean "plenty" or "soft mud and clay". The hundred stretches about north and east from the township of Booleroo Centre, about west and south. Strangways Land Act
The Strangways Land Act, Strangways Act or Waste Lands Amendment Act, were common names for legislation enacted in January 1869 in the colony of South Australia, formally titled ''An Act to further amend the "Waste Lands Act" 1869''. The Act enabled the purchase of land for farmers, allowing for closer settlement in areas of the province suited to more intensive agriculture, rather than vast pastoral runs on uncleared land leased from the government. It is named for Henry Strangways, who was premier and attorney-general when the legislation was passed, and had previously been the Minister for Crown Lands. It followed the ''Scrub Lands Act 1866'', which enabled long-term leases of crown land between farmers and the government for the first time, but with the proviso that the farmer would clear a certain proportion of the land each year. Philip Levi
Philip Levi (1 February 1822 – 13 May 1898) was an early settler and pastoralist of South Australia. Born at Brixton Hill, Surrey, England, Levi arrived in South Australia at the age of sixteen, aboard the '' Eden'' in 1838 with his parents Nathaniel Philip Levi and Sarah Levi (née Goldsmid), and their five other children. He was involved in pastoral and mercantile businesses in the north of South Australia and became a well known and influential businessman. His pastoral interests involved sheep and cattle in various partnerships, many of which in the period 1855–1870 involved Alfred Watts (1815–1884). His shipping interests included, with Jacob Smith, a share in the Port Adelaide tug ''Goolwa''. He was in 1863 one of the founders and a trustee of the Adelaide Club, where a portrait of him still hangs today. Alexander Lang Elder
Alexander Lang Elder (18 April 1815 – 5 September 1885) was a Scottish Australian businessman and politician in colonial South Australia. Biography Elder was the second son of George Elder of Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, by Joanna Haddo, his wife, daughter of Alexander Lang, of Leith, born at Kirkcaldy. He was the brother of pastoralist and businessman Thomas Elder. He emigrated on his father's schooner ''Minerva'' to South Australia, arriving on 2 January 1840 in Port Adelaide as the only cabin passenger, under Captain David Reid. He founded the well-known mercantile firm of Elders Limited, later Elder, Smith & Co., of Adelaide.
