Blast! (1972 Film)
''The Final Comedown'' is a 1972 blaxploitation drama film written, produced and directed by Oscar Williams and starring Billy Dee Williams and D'Urville Martin. The film is an examination of racism in the United States and depicts a shootout between a radical black nationalist group and the police, with the backstory leading up to the shootout told through flashbacks. The radical group is not identified by name in the film but closely resembles the Black Panther Party. The film was recut and re-released in 1976 under the title ''Blast!'' The new version featured additional footage directed by Allan Arkush, credited under the pseudonym "Frank Arthur Wilson." The original version has had several releases on DVD from various budget-line DVD manufacturers. Oscar Williams (filmmaker)
Oscar S. Williams (May 20, 1939 – January 30, 2023) was a film actor, screenwriter and film director. He was born in the St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands and raised in the United States. Williams died on January 30, 2023, in Qatar, where his son David lives. His oldest son Noel Williams still resides in Los Angeles, California. After his death, a group of speakers paid tribute to Williams at a Red Carpet Memorial Tribute at Caribbean Cinemas in St. Thomas. In American cinema, Blaxploitation is the film subgenre of action movie derived from the exploitation film genre in the early 1970s, consequent to the combined cultural momentum of the black civil rights movement, the black power movement, and the Black Panther Party, political and sociological circumstances that facilitated black artists reclaiming their power of the representation of the black ethnic identity in the arts. The term ''blaxploitation'' is a portmanteau of the words ''Black'' and ''exploitation'', coined by Junius Griffin, president of the Beverly Hills–Hollywood branch of the NAACP in 1972. Allan Arkush (born April 30, 1948) is an American director and producer of films, television and videos. He is a regular collaborator with Joe Dante. Early life Arkush grew up in Fort Lee, New Jersey. He graduated in 1966 from Fort Lee High School. His experiences there served as the inspiration for the film '' Rock 'n' Roll High School'' (1979). He attended New York University Film School from 1967 to 1970.
