Birmingham St. George's F.C. was a football club based in Smethwick, England. The club started as St George's FC in Aston, before moving to the Cape Hill brewery in 1886 under the name Mitchell St George's. Ancestry The club's origin was in two separate clubs: * Mitchells Brewery FC, a club claiming a foundation date of 1873, being the works side of the Mitchells & Butlers brewery; * St George's FC, a club founded in 1875, and based at Fentham Road in Aston. St George's St George's was active within the Birmingham & District Football Association, being founder members in late 1875. One of the first games for St George's was against Aston Villa in December 1875. Aston is an area of inner Birmingham, in the county of the West Midlands, England. Located immediately to the north-west of Central Birmingham, Aston constitutes a ward within the metropolitan authority. It is approximately from Birmingham City Centre. Aston Lower Grounds
The Aston Lower Grounds was a pleasure ground area in Aston, (since 1911, part of Birmingham), Warwickshire, England. It was open to the public in the late Victorian era. The facility included a lake, which lay across the boundary of the adjacent county, Staffordshire. History The Lower Grounds were originally the kitchen, private gardens, and fish-ponds belonging to Aston Hall. The Grounds, under the name of Aston Park, were opened to the public by Queen Victoria on 16 June 1858, marking her first visit to Birmingham. J. A. Langford was put in charge of the Aston Hall and Park Company, but the Park suffered from a number of disasters. In 1861, a group of "roughs" rioted when refused admission to a performance by Charles Blondin, and in July 1863, during a charity fête in the Park, Selina Powell, a tightrope walker who performed under the name of "Madame Geneive, the Female Blondin", fell to her death. Dennis Hodgetts
Dennis Hodgetts (28 November 1863 – 25 March 1945), commonly known as Denny Hodgetts, was a footballer in the early years of professional football in England. Signed as a Youth player for Mitchell St George's in 1878 and played for three years. When 17 he signed for Great Lever for the 1881–82 season. In 1882 he returned to Mitchell St. George's F.C. where he stayed for four years. Hodgetts signed for Aston Villa in February 1886. The following year he scored the first goal in Aston Villa's first FA Cup final triumph. In 1895 he collected another FA Cup winners medal with Villa. Hodgetts was also a key member of the Football League title-winning sides of 1894 and 1896. Season 1888–89 Hodgetts was described as powerful and alert and good with both feet. Winson Green is a loosely defined inner-city area in the west of the city of Birmingham, England. It is part of the ward of Soho. It is the location of HM Prison Birmingham (known locally as Winson Green Prison or "the Green") and of City Hospital (formerly Dudley Road Hospital) as well as of the former All Saints' Hospital. The area has a diverse multi-racial population, including large Afro-Caribbean and Asian communities. Harry Mitchell (brewer)
Captain Henry Mitchell Jr. (1862–1894) was the managing director of a brewery company co-founded by his father Henry Mitchell. He was also superintendent of the fire brigade at the company's Cape Hill brewery, and a captain in the Smethwick Rifle Volunteers. He founded a brewery football team, Mitchells St George's, later Birmingham St George's F.C. Harry was born on 11 September 1862, in Smethwick (then part of Staffordshire), and died from typhoid at the age of just 32. Memorials In 1897 Henry Mitchell purchased of land, and in 1899 presented this to Smethwick Corporation to form what was named in his son's memory "Harry's Park" (now known as " Harry Mitchell Park"). Henry also built and donated Smethwick Drill Hall and the accompanying Sergeant Instructor's house.
