William Felton Russell (February 12, 1934 – July 31, 2022) was an American professional basketball player who played Center (basketball), center for the Boston Celtics of the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1956 to 1969. He was the centerpiece of the Celtics Dynasty (sports), dynasty that played for 12 NBA championships and won 11 during his 13-year career. William Russell (February 26, 1905 – August 9, 1992) was an American music historian and modernist composer. Named Russell William Wagner at birth, when he decided to become a classical music composer, he dropped his last name—as it already "was taken" by Richard Wagner. He was commonly known as "Bill Russell". Composer Born in the small Missouri city of Canton, Bill Russell was a leading figure in percussion music composition, influenced by his acquaintances John Cage and Henry Cowell. In turn, Russell also influenced Cage, in his emphasis of percussion. During the 1930s, predating Cage's main work, Russell's percussion works called for vernacular textures such as Jack Daniels bottles, suitcases, and Haitian drums, as well as "prepared pianos", although it is not clear how specifically he wanted the piano to be prepared. Bill Russell (born 1949) is an American librettist and lyricist. Among his stage musicals are '' Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens'' and '' Side Show'', which was nominated for the Tony Award as Best Musical. Career Russell's first musical to be produced is ''Fortune'', which ran Off-Broadway at the Actors' Plahouse from April 27, 1980 to November 23, 1980. Ronald Melrose wrote the music, with Russell writing the book and lyrics. The musical director and arranger was Janet Hood; they have gone on to write several musicals together. The musical concerned four performers who were headed to be stars. According to ''The New York Times'' reviewer, John Corry, it "marked the maturity of the gay musical", and he commended the "literate" lyrics. Russell wrote the book and lyrics for the song cycle '' Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens'', with music by Janet Hood, which originally ran Off-Off-Broadway in 1990 and in the West End in 1993. Adam George Brown (16 July 1893 – 25 November 1971), who used the stage name Billy Russell, was a British comedian and character actor. Biography He was born in Birmingham, and first appeared on stage at the age of seven in 1900 in a theatrical show in Gloucester. He also worked in funfairs, and before the First World War as a child actor in the north of England, the Midlands and Wales, sometimes as part of a duo. He learned stagecraft from actors and music hall performers such as Bransby Williams and George Robey. A skilled visual artist, he sometimes appeared as "Baroni the Ambidextrous Cartoonist". He served in the South Staffordshire Regiment during the war, and entertained the troops as "The Trench Philosopher", performing monologues in the style of the character "Old Bill" devised by cartoonist Bruce Bairnsfather.. Bill Russell (shortstop)
William Ellis Russell (born October 21, 1948) is an American former shortstop, coach and manager in Major League Baseball. Russell played his entire 18-year, 2,181-game career with the Los Angeles Dodgers as the starting shortstop for four National League pennant winners and one World Series championship team. He also served as the team's manager from 1996 to 1998. Playing career A right-handed batter and thrower, Russell was selected in the ninth round of the 1966 MLB Draft out of Pittsburg (Kansas) High School and debuted with the Dodgers in as a 20-year-old outfielder. His first two MLB seasons were spent in the outfield as veteran Maury Wills was the Dodgers shortstop. In 1971, Russell split time between the infield, mostly at second base, and the outfield (primarily right field).
