Biathlon World Cup
The Biathlon World Cup is a top-level biathlon season-long competition series. It has been held since the winter seasons of 1977–78 for men and 1982–83 for women. The women's seasons until 1986–87 season were called the European Cup, although participation was not restricted to Europeans. Competition and format The World Cup season lasts from November or December to late March, with meetings in a different venue every week excluding some holidays and a couple of weeks before the season's major championships (World Championships or Winter Olympics). All in all, the season comprises nine to ten meetings, with events taking place from Wednesday–Thursday through Sunday. Relay competitions are held four to six times per season. The 1981–82 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the UIPMB ( Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon). Kjell Søbak
Kjell Søbak (born 21 June 1957) is a Norwegian former biathlete. At the 1984 Olympics of Sarajevo, Søbak finished second with the Norwegian relay team, which consisted of himself, Eirik Kvalfoss, Rolf Storsveen, and Odd Lirhus. Anatoly Alyabyev
Anatoly Nikolayevich Alyabyev (; 12 December 1951 – 11 January 2022) was a Soviet biathlete. Life and career Alyabyev was born in the village of Danilkovo, Velsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast. He initially trained at Children and Youth Sport School of Spartak in Vologda, but competed as a senior while training at the Armed Forces sports society in Leningrad. At the 1980 Olympics he was, together with Frank Ullrich the dominant biathlete taking gold medals in the 20 km and on the relay and bronze in the 10 km. Alyabyev best season came in 1980–1981, when he became second overall. Alyabyev was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980). He graduated from Lesgaft Military Institute of Physical Culture in 1981 and defended a dissertation for the Candidate of Pedagogical Science degree in 1997. Vladimir Barnashov
Vladimir Mikhaylovich Barnashov (; born 26 February 1951) is a Soviet former biathlete. Life and career Barnashov was born in the village of Ryazany, Muromtsevsky District, Omsk Oblast He trained at Dynamo sports society and was a member of the USSR National Biathlon Team from 1977. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid he won a gold medal with the Soviet relay team. He was also a bronze medalist in the USSR 4 × 7.5 km relay team at the 1979, 1981 and 1982 Biathlon World Championships. In the overall World Cup he came third overall in the 1978–79 season behind Klaus Siebert and Frank Ullrich. He was a coach of the USSR National Biathlon Team between 1984 and 1992, training six Olympic Champions in biathlon and becoming the Honoured Trainer of the USSR in 1988. Barnashov graduated from Omsk State Institute for Physical Culture in 1980 and is currently head coach of Russian biathlon team. Eberhard Rösch
Eberhard Rösch (born 9 April 1954) is a former East German biathlete. Rösch finished third overall in the World Cup in the 1977–78 and 1979–80 seasons. He worked for 17 years as a Stasi informer. Klaus Siebert
Klaus Siebert (29 April 1955 – 24 April 2016) was a German biathlete and biathlon coach who raced for East Germany. Career At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, Siebert won a silver medal on the relay with the East German relay team. In the Biathlon World Championships, Siebert earned two gold medals with the East German relay team in 1978 and 1979, and a bronze medal from 1977. He also garnered three individual medals including a gold medal from the 20 km in 1979 and two bronzes from the 10 km in 1975 and 1978. After retiring from competition he became a coach. He coached in Germany, China and Belarus. He returned to his coaching role with the Belarusian national biathlon team in January 2012 after spending much of the previous year ill with cancer. However, Siebert stepped down from this role ahead of the 2014-15 season due to health issues. Siebert died in Altenberg, Germany on 24 April 2016 after a long battle with cancer at age 60.
