Biathlon At The 2006 Winter Olympics – Men's Individual
The Men's 20 kilometre individual biathlon competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 11 February, at Cesana San Sicario. The individual race consisted of five laps around a four kilometre loop with four stops at the shooting range. During each shooting section, each biathlete fired five shots at five targets. Misses resulted in penalties of one minute per miss being added to the time for the course. The first and third shooting sections were conducted in the prone position, while the second and fourth were done standing. A total of 88 biathletes competed, starting with a staggered start and 30 seconds behind each competitor. Michael Greis of Germany hit 19 of the 20 targets and used a net time of 54:23.0 (with one penalty minute) to clinch the gold medal, 16 seconds ahead of Norway's Ole Einar Bjørndalen. Cesana San Sicario
Cesana San Sicario, located in Cesana Torinese, Italy was a location of a venue for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The biathlon facility is built for 6,500 spectators. The accommodation is located in Cesana and lies in a large ski area named Via Lattea. It is directly connected to the winter venues in Monginevro and Sestriere. The elevation of this area varies between 1630 and 1680 meters. The course is located near Cesana Pariol where the Winter Olympics's bobsled, luge and skeleton events were held. These venues were built as special venues for the Olympic Games with varying heights and difficulties. Marek Matiaško (born 29 October 1977) is a former Slovak Biathlon, biathlete. Matiaško was born in Bojnice, Trenčín, Slovakia on 29 October 1977. He competed in the 2002 Winter Olympics, 2002, 2006 Winter Olympics, 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, 2010 Winter Olympics in a range of biathlon events. Jay Hakkinen
Jay William Hakkinen (born July 19, 1977) is a former biathlete. He is a four-time American Olympian, and his 10th-place finish in the 20-kilometer individual race at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was the best finish ever by an American biathlete. Hakkinen retired from the sport at the end of the 2013–14 season. Background At the age of three, Hakkinen learned how to skate. Soon after, he picked up cross-country skiing, where he won the Junior 5 km freestyle. He got involved in biathlon when in 1994, he went for a year to a Norwegian town in a student exchange program. Zdeněk Vítek () (born 25 July 1977) is a Czech former biathlete. Vítek retired from the sport at the end of the 2013–14 season. In May 2014, he was named as the head coach for the Czech Republic's women's biathlon team. After four years in this role, in June 2018 Vitek became head coach of the Czech men's team. Sven Fischer (born 16 April 1971) is a German former biathlete. He trained with the WSV Oberhof 05 club, and was coached by Frank Ullrich and Fritz Fischer (national coaches) and Klaus Siebert (club coach). After the 2006/07 biathlon season, he retired.
