Berthold Viertel
Berthold Viertel (28 June 1885 – 24 September 1953) was an Austrian screenwriter and film director, known for his work in Germany, the UK and the US. Early career Viertel was born in Vienna, the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but later went to work in Berlin. Viertel developed a reputation as a poet and theatre director, before moving into film work from 1922. As a screenwriter and director, he collaborated with some of the leading figures of the silent era of German cinema and worked on several influential films. '' Uneasy Money'' (1926) is a work of New Objectivity film movement. He was married to screenwriter and actress Salka Viertel from 30 April 1918 to 20 December 1947. ''The Sacred Flame'' (German: ''Die heilige Flamme'') is a lost 1931 American drama film directed by William Dieterle and Berthold Viertel and starring Gustav Fröhlich, Dita Parlo and Hans Heinrich von Twardowski. ''City Girl'' is a 1930 American part-talkie sound film, sound drama film directed by F. W. Murnau, and starring Charles Farrell and Mary Duncan. It follows a waitress in Chicago who falls in love with a farmer in Minnesota and leaves her life in the city to be with him. It is based upon the play "The Mud Turtle" by Elliot Lester. Though shot as a silent feature, the film was refitted with some sound elements and released in 1930 as a sound film due to the public apathy to silent films. While the film has a few talking sequences, the majority of the film featured a synchronized musical score with sound effects using both the sound-on-disc and sound-on-film process. ''4 Devils'' (also known as ''Four Devils'') is a lost 1928 American Synchronized sound drama film directed by German director F. W. Murnau and starring Janet Gaynor. While the 1928 version of the film had no audible dialog, it was released with a synchronized musical score with sound effects using the sound-on-film movietone process. The synchronized version had only a limited release. The film was withdrawn to add talking sequences and the final Part-Talkie version was released to theatres in June of 1929. Both versions appeared to be lost. Plot Four orphans become a high wire act and encounter sinister goings-on at a circus. The Gaumont-British Picture Corporation was a British company that produced and distributed films and operated a cinema chain in the United Kingdom. It was established as an offshoot of France's Gaumont. Film production Gaumont-British was founded in 1898 as the British subsidiary of the French film studio Gaumont. In 1910, Gaumont Graphic Studios were at Shepherds Bush, in London. In 1914, the Gaumont-British film studios were opened, then completely rebuilt for sound, re-opening on 29 June 1932. The Prater is a large park and amusement park in Vienna, a city important to characters in the novel for several reasons. Peter Viertel (16 November 1920 – 4 November 2007) was an author and screenwriter. Biography Viertel was born to Jewish parents in Dresden, Germany, the writer and actress Salka Viertel and the writer Berthold Viertel. In 1928, his parents moved to Santa Monica, California, where Viertel grew up with his brothers, Hans and Thomas. The home in Santa Monica Canyon was the site of salons and meetings of the Hollywood intelligentsia and the émigré community of European intellectuals, particularly at the Sunday night tea parties given by Viertel's mother. However, Viertel identified more with Southern California youth culture than with the European milieu he was exposed to by his family.
