Bernard ('' Bernhard'') is a French and West Germanic masculine given name. It has West Germanic origin and is also a surname. The name is attested from at least the 9th century. ''Not Now, Bernard'' is a children's picture book written and illustrated by David McKee. It is widely considered a modern classic. Plot Bernard tries to attract the attention of his preoccupied parents who reply "Not now, Bernard". Bernard goes into the garden and meets a monster which eats him. The monster goes into the house and tries to attract the parents' attention but gets the same reaction from them, completely oblivious to the monster replacing their son. The monster lives Bernard's life, but more badly behaved, for the rest of the day and, at bed time, tries to tell Bernard's mother he is a monster, but she replies "Not now, Bernard". Publication First published in 1980 by Andersen Press, ''Not Now, Bernard'' has been translated into more than 20 languages and over its lifetime, it has never been out of print. David McKee
David John McKee (2 January 1935 – 6 April 2022), was a British writer and illustrator, chiefly of children's books and animations. For his contribution as a children's illustrator, he was UK nominee for the biennial international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006. Early life David John McKee was born on 2 January 1935 and raised in Tavistock, Devon, England. After attending grammar school, he studied at Plymouth College of Art. While still at college, he began selling one-off cartoons, particularly to the national press. On leaving college, he continued this to support himself while painting, drawing regularly for, among others, '' Punch'', ''Reader's Digest'', and '' The Times Educational Supplement''. The first book he sold was of a story he had told at college, ''Two Can Toucan''. It is about a toucan who can carry two cans of paint on its enormous bill. Family Brewery Bernard (officially in Czech ''Rodinný pivovar Bernard'') is a brewery in Humpolec, Czech Republic, founded in 1597. It is owned by Rodinný pivovar Bernard, a. s. (shareholders: Duvel Moortgat NV, Breendonk, Belgium 50%, Stanislav Bernard 25%, Josef Vávra 25%). History The era of beer brewing started in Humpolec in 1597, when the brewery belonged to the owner of the Herálec estate. In the 1930s, it employed 40 people and produced 20,000 hectolitres a year. The beer was sold in the Humpolec, Německý Brod (now Havlíčkův Brod), Ledečko and Pelhřimov regions. After World War II, the brewery was integrated into that state enterprise Horácké pivovary Jihlava, and in 1960 into Jihočeské pivovary České Budějovice.
