Benalla
Benalla is a small city in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia. The town sits on the Broken River, about north east of the state capital Melbourne. As of the , the population was 9,316. It is the administrative centre for the Rural City of Benalla local government area. History Prior to the European settlement of Australia, the Benalla region was populated by the Taungurung people, an Indigenous Australian people. A 1906 history recounts that prior to white settlement "as many as 400 blacks would meet together in the vicinity of Benalla to hold a corrobboree". The area was first explored in 1824 by Hamilton Hume and William Hovell, who recorded an agricultural settlement called "Swampy". The expedition was followed by that of Major Thomas Mitchell in 1834. An attack by indigenous people on the camp of shepherds working for George and William Faithful became known as the Faithful Massacre; eight settlers were killed in the incident. Battle Of Broken River
The Battle of Broken River, also known as the Faithfull Massacre, sometimes spelt Faithful Massacre, took place in 1838 when 20 Aboriginal Australians attacked 18 European settlers, killing eight of them. Reprisals against the Aboriginal people continued for many years afterwards, killing up to 100 people. Description On 11 April 1838, by the Broken River at Benalla, a party of some 18 men, employees of George and William Faithfull, were searching out new land to the south of Wangaratta for their livestock. According to Judith Bassett, some 20 Indigenous Australians attacked and at least one Koori and eight European ethnic groups, Europeans died. This was long known locally as the Faithfull Massacre. Benalla Art Gallery is a public art gallery in the regional town of Benalla, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The Benalla Art Gallery is a free, public gallery in Benalla, which opened in 1975. Victoria's ''Herald Sun'' newspaper described it in 2013 as one of Victoria's top ten regional galleries, with a "striking modernist building". The gallery complex was designed by Colin Munro and Philip Sargeant. The gallery's original design was reduced in size, culminating in an expansion proposal being canvassed in 2013. In 2013 a new art prize was announced for a work of the naked human figure. The winner of the non-acquisitive $50,000 2014 Benalla Nude Art Prize for 2014 was Juan Davila (artist), Juan Davila. Lake Mokoan
Lake Mokoan was an artificial lake in northern Victoria, Australia, roughly 7 km north-east of Benalla. It was created by diverting water from the Broken River and Hollands Creek into Winton and Green swamps. Construction began in the late 1960s and was completed in 1971. Hundreds of thousands of trees within the swamp soon died across the lake and surrounding plains, killed by the flooding of the former swampland. The large, shallow lake had a very high surface area to volume ratio, resulting in extreme water loss through evaporation, and there were frequent toxic algal blooms requiring regular closures for recreation activities and causing livestock to become ill. Although a locally popular watersports destination, the Victorian government decided to decommission the canals and lake to restore the landscape to a more natural wetland and woodland ecosystem. Lake Benalla (), an artificial lake located in Benalla in the High Country region of Victoria, Australia, was created in the 1970s. In 2010, more than one hundred residents surrounding the lake were evacuated from their homes at Benalla. The river peaked in the city at which was above its major flood level. A retaining wall built in approximately 1960 to ward off floods kept the flood water level under control. The Benalla Botanical Gardens are located on the shore of Lake Benalla. The lake is crossed by the Hume Freeway.
