Bay Area Rapid Transit Expansion
Throughout the history of Bay Area Rapid Transit, there have been plans to extend service to other areas. History The initial 1962 BART maps approved by voters included several lines beyond the core system marked as ''Possible Future Extensions''. Some have since come to fruition as previous extensions of the system: *The extension from Concord to Antioch, California, Antioch was carried out in phases with service to North Concord / Martinez in 1995, Pittsburg / Bay Point in 1996, and the eBART spur which started service in 2018. *A line to Livermore was completed as far as Dublin/Pleasanton by 1997, with final completion of the envisioned corridor to be carried out by Valley Link. *Service south of Fremont is expected to reach San Jose and Santa Clara (partially via the Caltrain right of way) by 2030. Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is a rapid transit system serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Altamont Pass
Altamont Pass, formerly Livermore Pass, is a low mountain pass in the Diablo Range of Northern California between Livermore in the Livermore Valley and Tracy in the San Joaquin Valley. The name is actually applied to two distinct but nearby crossings of the range. The lower of the two, at an elevation of , carries two railroad rights-of-way (ROWs) and Altamont Pass Road, part of the old Lincoln Highway and the original alignment of US 50 before it was bypassed in 1937. The bypass route travels over the higher summit, at , and now carries Interstate 580, a major regional highway heavily congested by Central Valley suburbanization. A tunnel boring machine (TBM), also known as a "mole" or a "worm", is a machine used to excavate tunnels. TBMs are an alternative to drilling and blasting methods and "hand mining", allowing more rapid excavation through hard rock, wet or dry soil, or sand (although each requires specialized TBM technologies).
