The classification system of inhabited localities in Russia and some other post-Soviet states has certain peculiarities compared with those in other countries. Classes During the Soviet time, each of the republics of the Soviet Union, including the Russian SFSR, had its own legislative documents dealing with classification of inhabited localities. After the Dissolution of the Soviet Union, the task of developing and maintaining such classification in Russia was delegated to the federal subjects.Articles 71 and 72 of the Constitution of Russia do not name issues of the administrative and territorial structure among the tasks handled on the federal level or jointly with the governments of the federal subjects. The Church of the Ascension of the Lord () is a Russian Orthodox church in Bataysk, Rostov Oblast, Russia. History The Ascension Church was built in 1872 in Koisug village of Don Host Oblast (now it is situated within the territory of Bataysk town). It belonged to Ekaterinoslav Diocese. The church was wooden, with plinth being built of brick. It had five domes: one big and four small ones. The bell tower of the Ascension church was completely built of brick. According to data of the Economic Department of Holy Synod, as of 1910, the church had a Sunday school, a lodge, a priest's house and ancillary facilities. In the 1930s, the Ascension Church was closed and destroyed. Only the first tier of the bell tower had been preserved. Monument To Andrew The Apostle
Monument to Andrew the Apostle () is a bronze monument in the center of Bataysk of Saint Andrew, who was one of the 12 apostles of Christ. The opening ceremony of the monument took place on September 27, 2003, when in old calendar Western Rite Orthodox Parishes Feast of the Cross has been commemorated. Ataman of the Don Cossack Host Nicholay Kozitsin, inhabitants of Bataysk, the Don and Zaporozhian Cossacks, students of the Rostov Maritime College attended at the ceremony. The statue is located on Saint Andrew Square near Holy Trinity Church. The 6-metre statue was designed by Honored Artist of Russia, sculptor Sergei Isakov. Erection of the monument was financed by Saint Nicholas's trust fund, which was the initiator of this project. The monument was built partially on donations, partially with funds from Don Cossacks. Alexey Maresyev
Aleksey Petrovich Maresyev (; 20 May 1916 – 18 May 2001) was a Soviet and Russian military pilot who became a List of World War II aces from the Soviet Union, Soviet fighter ace during World War II, World War II despite becoming a double amputee. Biography Before joining the army in 1937 Maresyev worked as a turning, turner and then participated in the construction of Komsomolsk-on-Amur. In 1941, he graduated from the Bataysk Military School of Aviation. He began his flights as a fighter pilot in August 1941. He had shot down four German aircraft by March 1942. On 5 April 1942 his Yakovlev Yak-1 was shot down near Staraya Russa, after which he was almost captured. Despite being badly injured, he managed to return to the Soviet-controlled territory, braving blizzards and german patrol units.
