Basketball At The 1976 Summer Olympics
Basketball events at the 1976 Summer Olympics was the ninth appearance of the sport of basketball as an official Olympic medal event. It took place from July 18 to July 27 at the Centre Étienne Desmarteau and the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Women's basketball was introduced to the Olympic program for the first time at this Games. The United States won the gold against Yugoslavia in the men's tournament, while the Soviet Union won the gold medal against the United States in the women's competition. Medal summary Qualification A single NOC may enter up to one men's team with 12 players and up to one women's team with 12 players. Automatic qualifications were granted to the host country for both events plus the three medal winners from the previous Olympic Games for the men's tournament, and the three first places at the 1975 FIBA World Championship for the women's tournament. John Donohue (basketball)
John Patrick Donohue, M.S.M. posthumous (June 4, 1931 – April 16, 2003) was an American-Canadian basketball coach. Donohue was the head coach of the senior Canadian men's national basketball team for 16 years, and he led them to several international successes. He was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, in 2013. Coaching career Donohue served as a basketball coach for St. Nicholas of Tolentine High School. He then served as the head coach of Power Memorial Academy, from 1959 to 1965. At Power Memorial, Donohue had a career win–loss record of 163–30, including winning 71 straight games with the star center of his team, Lew Alcindor (later known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar). Donohue's 1963–64 Power Memorial team was named, "The High School Team of The Century". Donohue went on to work as the head coach of the College of the Holy Cross, from 1965 to 1972. Phil Tollestrup
Phil Tollestrup (born October 12, 1949) is a former Canadian basketball player and Olympian. Among his accomplishments, he was the fourth overall scorer in the 1976 Summer Olympics (21.3 ppg), where Canada competed for the bronze medal; was drafted in the NBA by the Buffalo Braves in 1973; was a First Team CIAU All-Canadian (1973); was the University of Lethbridge's Male Athlete of the Year (1973); and was a First Team Canada West All-Star. International career Tollestrup played for the Canadian men's national basketball team from 1971 to 1979. This included representing Canada in the 1976 Olympics. Tollestrup played well in these Olympics, being the tournament's fourth overall leading scorer with 21.3 ppg. Lars Hansen (basketball)
Lars Erik Hansen (born September 27, 1954) is a Danish-Canadian former basketball center in the National Basketball Association for the Seattle SuperSonics. He also was a member of the Cinzano Milano, Eldorado Roma, OAR Ferrol and FC Barcelona Bàsquet in Europe. He played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. Hansen contributed to the Canada men's national basketball team finishing in eighth-place at the 1974 FIBA World Championship, for the first time in twenty years. He participated in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, helping Canada to a fourth-place finish. In 2006, he was inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame. Romel Raffin
Romel Raffin (born April 23, 1954, in Toronto, Ontario) is a three-time Canadian Olympian in men's basketball. A resident of Kitchener, Ontario, Raffin played for Canada at the 1976, 1984, and 1988 Summer Olympics. He was a member of the 1980 team as well which had qualified for the tournament but did not participate due to the Canadian Olympic Committee's decision to boycott the Moscow games. A centre-forward, Raffin played college basketball for the Penn State Nittany Lions from 1974 to 1978. He played professionally in Italy for one year and spent another year playing pro in Venezuela, with Cocodrilos de Caracas. In the early 80's Raffin taught physical education, as well as some other courses at Woodman Jr. High in Calgary. Raffin became basketball coach at Central Memorial High School in Calgary in 1989 and the school's athletic director in 1994. Bob Town
Robert Frederick "Bob" Town (born October 4, 1949) was a member of the Canadian men's national basketball team between 1972 and 1976. Canada finished fourth at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Town graduated from Churchill High School. He played college basketball at the University of Manitoba from 1967 and 1972 and was named a CIAU All-Canadian in 1972. As a member of the national team, Town participated in various European tournaments, the World University Games in Moscow, the Pan Am Games, and the Montreal Olympics. Town was a member of the St. Andrews Super Saints which won the Canadian Senior Men's Championship both in 1975 and 1976. Jamie Russell
James Russell (born 23 April 1952) is a Canadian basketball player, Olympian and a surgeon. His accomplishments include being the youngest starter for the Canadian men's national basketball team, performing well for Canada in multiple international tournaments, and being named the Canadian university (" CIAU") MVP in 1976. After his basketball career, Russell distinguished himself in the field of general surgery. International career Russell played for the Canadian national team from 1972 to 1979. At age 20, he was the youngest starter for the national team. Russell represented Canada in the 1976 Olympic games. Canada performed well in these Olympics, finishing fourth overall.
