Baseball World Cup
The Baseball World Cup (BWC) was an international baseball tournament for national teams around the world, sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF). First held in 1938 as the Amateur World Series (AWS), it was, for most of its history, the highest level of international baseball competition in the world. Even after it was supplanted in this regard in by the modern World Baseball Classic (WBC), the Baseball World Cup was still considered by the IBAF to be a major world championship, along with the WBC and the Summer Olympic Games. After the 2011 tournament, the Baseball World Cup was discontinued in favor of an expanded World Baseball Classic; the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) – successor to the IBAF – now organizes the WBC and awards its winner the title of "World Champion." 2011 Baseball World Cup
The 2011 Baseball World Cup (BWC) was the 39th international Men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation, which titled it the Amateur World Series from the 1938 tournament through the 1986 AWS. Panama were first-time hosts (beating out bids from Chinese Taipei and Venezuela), with games held in four cities, from October 1 to 15. The Netherlands defeated Cuba in the final, winning its first title, and only the second ever for a European team, after Great Britain's win of the inaugural 1938 AWS. There were 16 participating countries, split into two groups for Round 1, with the first four of each group qualifying for an amalgamated Round 2, which determined the single-game matchups for the finals. Baseball At The 1936 Summer Olympics
Baseball was again a demonstration sport at the 1936 Summer Olympics after a 24-year absence. It would become an official sport 56 years later at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Both of the teams that played in Berlin were from the United States. The exhibition game was played on 12 August 1936 in front of 90,000 spectators in Berlin's Olympic Stadium (Berlin), Olympic Stadium. The two teams were named the "World Champions" and the "U. S. Olympics". The World Champions won, 6–5. Les Mann, Leslie Mann, who had pushed strongly for inclusion of baseball as an Olympic sport, was the umpire. 1969 Amateur World Series
The 1969 Amateur World Series was the 17th edition of the Amateur World Series international baseball tournament. It was held, for the first time, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from August 15 through August 26, 1969. The competition marked the first time the United States national baseball team, United States participated in the Amateur World Series since the 1942 Amateur World Series, 1942 tournament. Cuba national baseball team, Cuba and the US were both 9-0 when they met in the finals, with Cuba winning 2–1. The 1942 Amateur World Series was the fifth edition of the Amateur World Series (AWS), an international men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (which titled it the Baseball World Cup as of the 1988 tournament). The tournament took place, for the fourth consecutive time, in Cuba. It was contested by four national teams playing twelve games each from September 26 through October 20 in Havana. Cuba won its third AWS title. There was a noticeably lower participation of teams, in part due to the effects of World War II. The 1940 Amateur World Series was the third Amateur World Series (AWS), an international men's amateur baseball tournament. The tournament was sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation (which titled it the Baseball World Cup as of the 1988 tournament). Jaime Mariné
Jaime Mariné y Montes was a Cuban baseball administrator and soldier. He is best known as the second president of the International Baseball Federation (IBF) from 1940 to 1943. Mariné, nicknamed "El Catalancito," was also a close associate of Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Early life Mariné was born in Catalonia, Spain. He reportedly arrived in Cuba taking care of a gift horse from Spanish King Alfonso XIII to Cuban President Mario García Menocal. He took up residence in Havana and enlisted in the Cuban Army, where he first met Fulgencio Batista. Batista regime Mariné, as a sergeant in the Cuban Army, participated in the Cuban Revolution of 1933 that brought Fulgencio Batista to power. As Batista's aide-de-camp, he helped organize Batista's Military Intelligence Service in 1935. The Great Britain national baseball team is the national men's baseball team of the United Kingdom. It is governed by the British Baseball Federation, and is also a member nation of the Confederation of European Baseball. History The British team, managed by George McNeil, won the inaugural Baseball World Cup in 1938, beating the United States by four games to one in the series hosted in England. British Baseball Federation
The British Baseball Federation (BBF) is the national governing body of baseball within the United Kingdom. Organised modern baseball has been played in the United Kingdom since the first baseball league began in 1890, with a succession of different governing bodies in place over that time. The BBF was founded in 1987. The BBF is a federated member of both WBSC Europe and WBSC. Until December 2020, the BBF was a joint member (with the British Softball Federation) of BaseballSoftballUK (BSUK), a sports development agency. John Moores (British Businessman)
Sir John Moores (25 January 1896 – 25 September 1993) was an English businessman, telegraphist, football club owner, politician and philanthropist, most famous for the founding of the now defunct Littlewoods retail and football pools company. Liverpool John Moores University is named in his honour. Moores' football-betting empire and Littlewoods stores made him one of Britain's richest men.
