Balfour Williamson
Balfour Williamson & Co was a shipping company based in Liverpool, England, and later an export confirming house and freight forwarding company. Latterly a subsidiary of Lonmin (formerly Lonrho). In October 2016 the company returned to family ownership when acquired by Guthrie Williamson, the great-great-great-grandson of the founder Stephen Williamson. The company was founded in 1851 by two young men from Fife, Scotland, Alexander Balfour and Stephen Williamson. They were joined for a time by a third partner, David Duncan. The company traded with South America, and had offices in Valparaíso, Chile and San Francisco. Williamson and Duncan were responsible for the company's operations in Chile, which thrived. Confirming House
A confirming house is a specialised agency that purchases and arranges the export of goods on the behalf of overseas buyers. They finance the movement of goods into the country by offering short-term credit to importers and guaranteeing, or confirming, payment to the suppliers in the suppliers own domestic currency. The confirming house usually negotiates the price with the suppliers, ships, insures and provides information on the goods on the overseas buyers' behalf. If the overseas buyer is unable to pay for the goods the suppliers are liable to refund the confirming house. A freight forwarder or forwarding agent is a person or a company who co-ordinates and organizes the movement of shipments on behalf of a shipper (party that arranges an item for shipment) by liaising with carriers (party that transports goods). Lonmin
Lonmin plc, formerly Lonrho plc, was a British producer of platinum group metals operating in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa. It was listed on the London Stock Exchange. Its registered office was in London, and its operational headquarters were in Johannesburg, South Africa. Lonmin rose to international attention following the Marikana miners' strike in August 2012, in which over 100 striking Lonmin employees were shot (36 killed and 78 wounded) by South African Police Service officers. Stephen Williamson
Stephen Williamson (28 June 1827 – 16 June 1903) was a founder of the Liverpool shipping company Balfour Williamson & Co. and a Scottish Liberal Party politician. Biography He was born in Cellardyke, Fife in 1827, the son of Archibald Williamson, a shipowner. In 1848 he went to Liverpool, and there founded, with Alexander Balfour, the firm of Balfour Williamson, trading with South America with offices in Valparaíso, Chile and San Francisco. He married Anne Guthrie, the daughter of Dr Thomas Guthrie. In 1880 he was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for St Andrews, a seat he held until 1885, and then represented Kilmarnock Burghs between 1886 and 1895. Alexander Balfour
Alexander Balfour (2 September 1824 – 16 April 1886) was a Scottish people, Scottish merchant and founder of the Liverpool shipping company Balfour Williamson. Early life Balfour was born in Leven, Fife, Leven, Fife, as the eldest of three sons of Henry Balfour of Dawyck (1796–1854), member of the Scotland, Scottish landed gentry and a foundry owner, by his wife, Agnes Bisset (1804–1881). David Duncan (UK Politician)
David Duncan (1831 – 30 December 1886) was a British merchant and shipper and a Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician who briefly represented the seat of Barrow-in-Furness (UK Parliament constituency), Barrow-in-Furness. Duncan was born at Alyth, Perthshire, the fourth son of James Duncan, a manufacturer and merchant, and was educated at the High School of Dundee. He and his elder brother James went to South America where they became very successful traders. In 1851 he went into partnership with Alexander Balfour and Stephen Williamson in the shipping business of Balfour Williamson. He and Williamson were based in Valparaiso while Balfour looked after the Liverpool end of the business. The Williamson-Balfour Company (or ''Williamson, Balfour and Company'') was a Scottish owned Chilean company. Its successor company, Williamson Balfour Motors S.A., is a subsidiary of the British company Inchcape plc. The company was founded in Valparaiso in 1863 as a subsidiary of the Liverpool shipping company Balfour Williamson (founded by the Scots Alexander Balfour and Stephen Williamson). The company was involved in the export of nitrates and wool to England, and later the west coast of the United States. The company diversified into railways, oil, minerals and other activities. Santiago (1856 Ship)
The ''Santiago'' was a 455-ton barque launched in 1856. It was built by Henry Balfour of Methil, Fife for the Liverpool shipping company Balfour Williamson. It sailed mainly between Liverpool and Chile, but also to Australia. Its remnant hull, which lies in a ships' graveyard in South Australia, was considered 'the oldest intact iron hull sailing vessel in the world', until part of the central section collapsed in January 2023. Career After service with Balfour Williamson, she was sold in 1888 to a German company, and in 1890 to Norwegians.
