The badminton women's doubles tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place from 11 to 17 August at Riocentro - Pavilion 4. The seeding was decided on 21 July 2016. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Ashwini Ponnappa Machimanda (born 18 September 1989) is an Indian badminton player who represents the country at the international badminton circuit in both the women's and mixed doubles disciplines. She had a successful partnership with Jwala Gutta as the pair has won many medals in international events including a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games and bronze medals at the Uber Cup and the Asian Badminton Championships. They were consistently ranked among the top 20 in the BWF World Ranking reaching as high as no. 10. Ponnappa and Gutta also won the bronze medal at the BWF World Championships in 2011, becoming the first Indian pair and women and only the second overall to win a medal at the World Championships. Jwala Gutta (born 7 September 1983) is an Indian badminton player. Beginning in the late 1990s, she represented India at international events in both mixed and women's doubles. She has a total of 316 match wins in both the disciplinesthe most by any Indianand peaked at no. 6 in the world rankings. Gutta has won medals at numerous tournaments on the BWF circuit including a silver at the 2009 Superseries Masters Finals and a bronze at the 2011 World Championships. Sapsiree Taerattanachai (; ; born 18 April 1992) is a Thai badminton player. She claimed titles in the mixed doubles with Dechapol Puavaranukroh at the 2017 SEA Games and at the 2021 World Championships. Sapsiree and Dechapol made history as the first ever Thai pair to win the year-end Finals tournaments, the World Championships title and rank first in the world ranking. Puttita Supajirakul
Puttita Supajirakul (; born 29 March 1996) is a Thai badminton player. She reached a career high as world number 9 in the women's doubles. Supajirakul was the women's doubles bronze medalists at the Asian, and World Juniors and also at the BWF World Championships. Together with Sapsiree Taerattanachai, she recorded as the first Thai women's doubles to medal at the World Championships. She competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Supajirakul was part of Thailand's gold medals-winning team at the 2015, 2017 and 2019 SEA Games in the women's team event. Selena Piek (born 30 September 1991) is a Dutch badminton player who specializes in doubles. She won the gold medals at the European Games in 2019 in the women's doubles, and in 2023 in the mixed doubles. She was part of the Badminton Europe Athletes' Commission from 2016 to 2020. Eefje Muskens (born 17 June 1989), is a Dutch former badminton player who specializes in doubles. Her last partner for women's doubles was Selena Piek. Greysia Polii (; born 11 August 1987) is an Indonesian badminton player specializing in doubles. She won gold medals in the women's doubles at the 2014 Asian Games, at the 2019 SEA Games and at the 2020 Summer Olympics. Nitya Krishinda Maheswari Korwa (born 16 December 1988) is an Indonesian badminton player affiliated with Jaya Raya Jakarta and current coach in Indonesia national badminton team, specializing in doubles event. The Badminton World Federation, aka BWF, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton approved by the International Olympic Committee.
