Badminton At The 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's Doubles
The men's doubles badminton tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place 11–20 August 2016 at Riocentro - Pavilion 4. The seeding was decided on 21 July 2016. Defending Olympic champion Fu Haifeng and his partner Zhang Nan of China defeated Malaysia's Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in the final, 16–21, 21–11, 23–21, to win the gold medal in men's doubles badminton at the 2016 Summer Olympics. It was Fu's second consecutive men's doubles gold medal, after winning the event in 2012 with Cai Yun, and Zhang's second Olympic badminton gold medal after winning the mixed doubles event in 2012 with Zhao Yunlei. The pair saved two match points in the third game on route to the title. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. A second bomb exploded a few miles away at a powerhouse responsible for providing electrical energy to Riocentro; it was thrown over the fence and exploded on the ground, and the electric power supply was never interrupted that evening. Kim Sa-rang (badminton)
Kim Sa-rang (; ; born 22 August 1989) is a South Korean badminton player. He competed at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics. Career Kim Sa-rang started playing badminton when he was in elementary school, and his international debut on the Osaka International tournament. He joined the Korea national badminton team in 2008. At that year, he won the Australia International Challenge tournament in the men's doubles event partnered with Choi Sang-won. In 2011, he won the Turkey International tournament in the men's doubles event with Kim Gi-jung. In 2012, he and Kim Gi-jung won their first Superseries title at the Japan Open tournament. Kim Gi-jung or Kim Ki-jung (; or ; born 14 August 1990) is a South Korean badminton player. He competed at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics in the men's doubles event. Career In 2008, he won a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in the mixed doubles event partnered with Eom Hye-Won. In 2009, he competed at the Hong Kong East Asian Games and won a silver medal in the men's team event and a bronze medal in the men's doubles event partnered with Kwon Yi-goo. Hendra Setiawan
Hendra Setiawan (born 25 August 1984) is an Indonesian retired badminton player. He is an Olympic Games gold medalist, four-time World Champion, two-time Asian Games gold medalist, and two-time All England champion. With these achievements, Setiawan has collected all major individual titles in badminton. He is considered to be one of the greatest Indonesian badminton players of all time. Setiawan was ranked first in the men's doubles with two different partners. Together with Markis Kido, he achieved the world no. 1 in September 2007, and with Mohammad Ahsan in November 2013. Mohammad Ahsan
Mohammad Ahsan (born 7 September 1987) is an Indonesian retired badminton player affiliated with Djarum club who specializes in the men's doubles. He is a three-time World Champion, three-time season ending finals champion, and Asian Games gold medalist. Joining the Djarum club since 2007, opened Ahsan's opportunity to join the Indonesian national team until he finally implemented it in the middle of 2008. Paired with Bona Septano, they managed to win the bronze medal at the 2011 BWF World Championships, and were ranked as high as sixth in the BWF World Rankings. Yoo Yeon-seong
Yoo Yeon-seong (; born 19 August 1986) is a South Korean professional badminton player. He specializes in doubles events and was ranked as high as No. 2 worldwide with his former partner, Ko Sung-hyun. The two also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. For a long time he played mixed doubles with Kim Min-jung, but later switched partners to play with Chang Ye-na, starting in 2011. Starting in late 2013, his men's doubles partner was Lee Yong-dae. Lee Yong-dae (; ; born 11 September 1988) is a South Korean professional badminton player who had been successful in both men's and mixed doubles. He reached world number 1 ranking with 4 different partners, Jung Jae-sung, Ko Sung-hyun and Yoo Yeon-seong in men's doubles, and Lee Hyo-jung (badminton), Lee Hyo-jung in mixed doubles. He won a total of 43 Superseries titles, 37 in the men's doubles, the most of any doubles player in one discipline, and 6 in mixed doubles. He was ranked world number 1 in men's doubles for 117 consecutive weeks with his last partner, Yoo Yeon-seong. The Badminton World Federation, aka BWF, is the international governing body for the sport of badminton approved by the International Olympic Committee. It was founded on 5 July 1934 as the International Badminton Federation with nine member nations: Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.
