The badminton men's singles tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place from 11 to 20 August at Riocentro - Pavilion 4. The seeding was decided on 21 July 2016. China's Chen Long defeated Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, 21–18, 21–18, to win the gold medal in men's singles badminton at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Riocentro
Riocentro is an exhibition and convention center located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1977, it is the largest exhibition center in Latin America. Notable events 1981 May Day attack On April 30, 1981, during a May Day music concert, Riocentro was the target of a terrorist attack by hardliner members of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985). Sergeant Guilherme Pereira do Rosário and then-Captain Wilson Dias Machado, nowadays a Colonel, were responsible for detonating two bombs at the venue. Around 9 p.m., however, one of the bombs exploded in the lap of Sergeant Rosário, killing him and seriously wounding Machado. Chou Tien-chen (; born 8 January 1990) is a Taiwanese badminton player. He became the first local shuttler in 17 years to win the men's singles title of the Chinese Taipei Open in 2016 since Indonesian-born Fung Permadi won it in 1999. Jaspar Yu Woon Chai (; born 14 November 1988) is a Bruneian badminton player. He achieved a career high ranking of 199 in the men's singles discipline. It was announced in May 2016 that he was awarded the tripartite commission to compete in the men's singles event at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Yuhan Tan (born 21 April 1987 in Bilzen, Belgium) is a male left-handed badminton player and Orthopedic surgeon from Belgium. Born to a Chinese-Indonesian father and a Belgians, Belgian mother, He is a 10 time Belgian National Badminton Championships, Belgian Champion in the men's singles category which makes him the most successful men's singles athlete in Belgian history. Misha Zilberman (; ; born 25 January 1989) is an Olympic badminton player. Born in Russia, he competed for Israel at the 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024 Summer Olympics, coming in 33rd, 14th, and 15th respectively, with his 2024 results still to be determined. Derek Wong (born Wong Zi Liang, traditional Chinese: 黃梓良, 13 January 1989) is a retired Singaporean badminton player. Wong is a two-time Olympian, who took part at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics, where he was flag bearer in the latter's Parade of Nations.
