Badminton At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Singles
These are the results of the women's singles competition in badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The tournament consisted of a single-elimination tournament. Matches were played using a best-of-three games format. Games were played to 21 points, using rally scoring. Each game had to be won by a margin of two points, except when the game was won by a player who reached 30 even if the lead was only 1 at that point. The top eight seeds in the tournament were placed in the bracket so as not to face each other until the quarterfinals. All other competitors were placed by draw. Beijing University Of Technology Gymnasium
The Beijing University of Technology Gymnasium () is an indoor arena located on the campus of the Beijing University of Technology in the Chaoyang District, Beijing, Chaoyang District in Beijing, China. The gymnasium hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics Badminton at the 2008 Summer Olympics, badminton and Gymnastics at the 2008 Summer Olympics, rhythmic gymnastics events. The gymnasium seating capacity is 7,500 and has a floor space of 2700 square metres. After the Olympic Games, it has served as a training facility for Chinese badminton teams and also as a sports and recreational activities centre for students and local communities. Olga Konon
Olga Anatolyevna Konon (; ; born 11 November 1989) is a badminton player from Germany, and is of Belarusian origin. Career Konon is known for her speed and attacking style of play. She is currently coached by Kim Ji Hyun and Per Henrik Croona. Konon won her first major international tournament in 2004, at the Finnish International in the mixed event. She was only 14 at the time. In 2005, she traveled to the north east of England to take on then county champions, mixed doubles team Andrew Dodds and Cheryl Wigham. Konon and her partner were beaten 21–9, 21–14. In her next match she suffered a knee ligament injury at the Swedish International. After this injury, in 2007, she won a gold medal in girls' doubles and a bronze medal in girls' singles at the European Junior Championships. Hadia Hosny
Hadia Mohamed Hosny Elsaid Mohamed Tawfik El Said (born 30 July 1988) is an Egyptian badminton player who represented her country at the 2008, 2012 and 2020 Summer Olympics. She won the women's singles title at the 2010 African Championships, and emerged as the women's doubles gold medalist at the 2019 African Games. Deyanira Angulo Chiñas (born 3 March 1991) is a Mexican professional badminton player. She was the only badminton player from Mexico to compete at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Anna Kathleen Rice (born 19 August 1980) is a Canadian badminton player. She attended Handsworth Secondary School, and completed a B.A. from the University of British Columbia. Career In 1999, Rice represented British Columbia competed at the Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook, clinched the women's singles title and runner-up in the women's doubles. In 2000, Rice moved to Denmark to play in the Danish Club League and to train at the International Badminton Academy under coach Michael Kjeldsen. Ana Luisa Flôr Moura (born 21 January 1986) is a Portuguese badminton player from the Club Sports Madeira. Moura was the National Junior champion in the girls' singles and doubles event in 2004, and also in the girls' singles, doubles and mixed doubles event in 2005. At the National senior championships, she won once in the women's singles, three times in the women's doubles and two times in the mixed doubles event. In 2007, Moura won the singles title at the Iran and Algeria International tournaments, and in the doubles event at the Ecuador and Mauritius International tournaments. Jeanine Cicognini (born 14 November 1986) is a Swiss badminton player who now represents Italy. Cicognini won her first Swiss senior title at age 16 and has since won the award seven more times. Biography In 2005, she won the silver medal at the European Junior Badminton Championships in the girls' singles event. Cicognini became a badminton professional as soon as she left school. She soon moved to Denmark, and then moved to the International Badminton Federation's training centre in Saarbrücken, Germany. In 2010, she returned to Switzerland and joined the sport army, where she played for the BC Uzwil. Anu Nieminen
Anu Kristiina Nieminen (born 16 December 1977; née Weckström) is a Finnish badminton player. Born in Helsinki, Nieminen joined the national team in 1994. She is one of the best badminton players in Finland, having won twelve National Championships, and competed in four consecutive Summer Olympics. Nieminen first represented Finland at the Olympic level at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. She reached the second round before losing to Kanako Yonekura of Japan. Maja Tvrdy (born 20 November 1983) is a Slovenian badminton player. She competed for Slovenia at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Cheng Shao-chieh (; born 4 January 1986) is a badminton player from Taiwan. Cheng played badminton at the 2004 Summer Olympics for the Republic of China as Chinese Taipei. In women's singles, she defeated Ling Wan Ting of Hong Kong and Jun Jae-youn of South Korea in the first two rounds. In the quarterfinals, Cheng lost to Gong Ruina of China 3–11, 3–11.
