BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting protein 2 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the ''BNIP2'' gene. Function This gene is a member of the BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kd-interacting protein (BNIP) family. Though the specific function is unknown, it interacts with the E1B 19 kDa protein which is responsible for the protection of virally induced cell death, as well as E1B 19 kDa-like sequences of BCL-2, also an apoptotic protector. Bcl-2, encoded in humans by the ''BCL2'' gene, is the founding member of the Bcl-2 family of regulator proteins. BCL2 blocks programmed cell death (apoptosis) while other BCL2 family members can either inhibit or induce it. It was the first apoptosis regulator identified in any organism. The Bcl-2 family (TC# 1.A.21) consists of a number of Conserved sequence, evolutionarily-conserved proteins that share Bcl-2 Sequence homology, homology (BH) domains.
