Avenay-Val-d'Or
Avenay-Val-d'Or () is a commune in the Marne department, northeastern France. Located in the Vallée de la Marne, part of the Champagne region, its primary industry is viticulture. History A number of Roman remains have been discovered nearby, including a fort and medals showing Emperors Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus. It was formerly the site of a Benedictine abbey founded by Bertha of Avenay at the end of the sixth century CE, later destroyed during the French Revolution. One of the most prestigious religious institutions in Champagne, it became so popular in the 12th century that limits were placed on the number of nuns accepted. Bertha Of Val D'Or
Bertha of Val d'Or (birth unknown, death c. 690), was an abbess, virgin, and martyr, and is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as a saint. Her husband was Gombert, Lord of Champenois, who was a nobleman and member of the royal family of France, with whom she lived "a celibate life". The legend of Bertha's life is "very late and unreliable. Laurent Majoret wrote a ''vita'' that was first published in Toul in 1650 and reissued in Rheims in 1700 and in 1743. Gombert built a convent for Bertha and her maidens at Avenay, and then retired to a monastery on the coast.Dunbar, p. 117 After Gombert was killed by "idolaters" and "pagan marauders", she was directed by a vision to move her nuns to Val d'Or, near Avenay, in the Champagne region of northeastern France. It is uncertain if the convent followed the Dominican Rule. Avenay () is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region of north-western France. Geography Avenay is located some 12 km south-west of Caen just east of Évrecy. Access to the commune is by the D36 road from Sainte-Honorine-du-Fay in the south-west which passes through the heart of the commune and the village and continues north to join the D8. Apart from the village there is the hamlet of ''La Coquerie'' on the eastern border. The commune consists entirely of farmland. The ''Guigne'' river flows along the northern border of the commune towards the east where it joins the Orne south of Bully. History The oldest traces of Avenay village date from Gallo-Roman times. In 1820-1821 some remains of Gallo-Roman houses were found. In the Middle Ages, the village depended on the Bishop of Bayeux.
