University Of Essex
The University of Essex is a public research university in Essex, England. Established by royal charter in 1965, Essex is one of the original plate glass universities. Essex's shield consists of the ancient arms attributed to the Kingdom of Essex, and the motto, "Thought the harder, heart the keener", is adapted from the Anglo-Saxon poem '' The Battle of Maldon''. The university comprises three campuses with its primary campus located within Wivenhoe Park and campuses in Southend-on-Sea and in Loughton. Essex is rated Gold for Teaching Excellence by the TEF since 2017, named University of the Year at the Times Higher Education Awards in 2018, and is ranked an internationally excellent research-intensive university by the REF. Oliver Hart (economist)
Oliver Simon D'Arcy Hart (born October 9, 1948) is a British-born American economist, currently the Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor at Harvard University. Together with Bengt R. Holmström, he received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2016. Biography Oliver Hart was born in Britain to Philip D'Arcy Hart, a medical researcher, and Ruth Meyer, a gynecologist. Both his parents were Jewish; his father was a member of the Montagu family; Oliver's great-grandfather was Samuel Montagu, 1st Baron Swaythling. Hart earned his B.A. in mathematics at King's College, Cambridge, in 1969 (where his contemporaries included the former Bank of England Governor Mervyn King), his M.A. in economics at the University of Warwick in 1972, and his Ph.D. in economics at Princeton University in 1974. Mohammed Ghanbari
Mohammed Ghanbari ( fa, محمد قنبری) is an emeritus professor in the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering focused in the areas of Video Networking at the University of Essex. He graduated from Aryamehr University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, with a BSc degree in electrical engineering in 1970, an MSc in telecommunications, and a PhD in electronics from the University of Essex, England in 1976 and 1979 respectively. After ten years of work in radio and television broadcasting, he started his academic career in 1986 as a Research Fellow working on video coding for Packet Networks. He was then appointed as a Lecturer at the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering at Essex in 1988 and promoted to senior lecturer then reader in 1993 and 1995, respectively. Richard Bartle
Richard Allan Bartle FBCS FRSA (born 10 January 1960) is a British writer, professor and game researcher in the massively multiplayer online game industry. He co-created ''MUD1'' (the first MUD) in 1978, and is the author of the 2003 book ''Designing Virtual Worlds''. Life and career In 1988, Bartle received a PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Essex, where as an undergraduate, he created ''MUD1'' with Roy Trubshaw in 1978. He lectured at Essex until 1987, when he left to work full-time on ''MUD'' (known as ''MUD2'' in its present version). Recently he has returned to the university as a part-time professor and principal teaching fellow in the Department of Computing and Electronic Systems, supervising courses on computer game design as part of the department's degree course on computer game development. George Alfred Barnard
George Alfred Barnard (23 September 1915 – 9 August 2002) was a British statistician known particularly for his work on the foundations of statistics and on quality control. Biography George Barnard was born in Walthamstow, London. His father was a cabinet maker and his mother had been a domestic servant. George's sister Dorothy Wedderburn became a sociologist and eventually Principal of Royal Holloway, University of London. George attended the local grammar school, the Monoux School, and from there he won a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge to read mathematics. In 1937 he went on to Princeton University to do graduate work on mathematical logic with Alonzo Church. Barnard was on holiday in Britain when the Second World War started and he never went back to Princeton to finish his PhD. Anthony Venables
Anthony James Venables, CBE, (born 25 April 1953), is a British economist and the BP Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics, University of Oxford. Venables is known as one of the pioneers of New economic geography. He co-authored along with Paul Krugman and Masahisa Fujita the influential book ''The Spatial Economy - Cities, Regions and International Trade'' (2001). He is the current director of the Oxford Centre for the Analysis of Resource Rich Economies (OxCarre). He also serves on the Steering Group of the International Growth Centre. From 2005 to 2008, he held the position of Chief Economist at the UK Department for International Development. Anthony F. Shorrocks is a British development economist. Academic career Between January 2001 and April 2009 he was Director of UNU-WIDER. Prior to that he was Professor at the London School of Economics and before that he worked at the University of Essex. He has also had several ''visiting'' appointments in the US, Canada, Italy, and Russia. He has many publications in leading economic journals on income and wealth distribution, inequality, poverty, and mobility. Motty Perry
Motty Perry ( he, מוטי פרי); born October 2, 1949) is an Israeli professor of economics at the University of Warwick, England and the emeritus Don Patinkin Professor of Economics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. Biography Motty Perry was born on Kibbutz Yad Mordechai. He has a B.A. in Economics from Bar Ilan University, an MA in economics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University. In 2005–2008, Motty Perry was associate editor of the ''Journal of Games and Economics Behavior'' and of the ''Journal of Economic Theory''. Abhinay Muthoo
Abhinay Muthoo is an economist specializing in negotiations, game theory and public policy. Abhinay has 37 years of teaching and research experience, across several universities including Bristol, Cambridge, Essex, Warwick and the LSE. Michio Morishima
was a Japanese heterodox economist and public intellectual who was the Sir John Hicks Professor of Economics at the London School of Economics from 1970–88. He was also professor at Osaka University and member of the British Academy. In 1976 he won the Order of Culture (文化勲章, Bunka-kunshō). Career Originally desiring a career as a historical novelist, at the university Morishima pursued social science, studying both economics and sociology under Yasuma Takada.
