Alliance for Italy ( it, Alleanza per l'Italia; ApI) was a centrist political party in Italy. The party, which was described in its manifesto as "democratic, liberal, popular" as opposed both to "right-wing populism" and the "social-democratic left", described as "an experience with high and memorable value, yet by now run out", was launched on 11 November 2009 by Francesco Rutelli, senator for the Democratic Party (PD) and former leader of Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy (DL). The core of the party was composed by the Free Democrats, the faction Rutelli launched some months before leaving the PD. Most of the early party members were liberals and Christian democrats coming from the PD, including Linda Lanzillotta, Gianni Vernetti and Donato Mosella or disgruntled centrists from Italy of Values, like Pino Pisicchio. Democracy is Freedom – The Daisy ( it, Democrazia è Libertà – La Margherita, DL), commonly known simply as The Daisy (''La Margherita''), was a centrist political party in Italy. The party was formed from the merger of three parties within the centre-left coalition: the Italian People's Party, The Democrats and Italian Renewal. The party president and leader was Francesco Rutelli, former mayor of Rome and prime ministerial candidate during the 2001 general election for The Olive Tree coalition, within which The Daisy electoral list won 14.5% of the national vote. Lorenzo Dellai (born 28 November 1959 in Trento) is an Italian politician deputy of the Chamber of Deputies, and former governor of the Autonomous Province of Trento and former President of the region of Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. Lega Nord (; acronym: LN), whose complete name is (), is a right-wing, federalist, populist and conservative political party in Italy. The 2009 Democratic Party leadership election was held in July–November 2009, following the resignation of Walter Veltroni in February 2009, after 16 months as secretary of the Democratic Party (PD), a political party in Italy. Pier Luigi Bersani, a former minister in several centre-left governments hailing from the Italian Communist Party (then Democratic Party of the Left and Democrats of the Left), was elected secretary in an open primary on 25 October. Three million Democratic supporters turned out to vote and it was a real fight between three candidates, with Bersani winning with only 53% of the votes cast. Pier Ferdinando Casini (; born 3 December 1955) is an Italian politician. He served as President of the Chamber of Deputies from 2001 to 2006. Casini is the honorary president of the Centrist Democrat International and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. From 1993 to 2001, he served as secretary of Christian Democratic Centre, while from 2002 until 2016 he was the leader of Union of the Centre. Giuseppe "Pino" Pisicchio (born 23 May 1954) is an Italian politician, journalist, essayist and professor. Biography Pino Pisicchio graduated in law with honors from the University of Bari. A member of the Christian Democracy, first in the current of Aldo Moro and then in left-wing current of Carlo Donat-Cattin, Pisicchio was elected for the first time to the Chamber of Deputies in 1987, with about 80,000 preference votes, and was re-confirmed also in 1992.
