Allan Ramsay (15 October 16867 January 1758) was a Scottish poet (or ''makar''), playwright, publisher, librarian, and impresario of early Enlightenment Edinburgh. Life and career Allan Ramsay was born at Leadhills, Lanarkshire, to John Ramsay, superintendent of Lord Hopetoun's lead-mines and his wife, Alice Bower, a native of Derbyshire. Allan Ramsay and his elder brother Robert probably attended the parish school at Crawfordjohn. In 1701 Allan was apprenticed to a wig-maker in Edinburgh and received his indentures back by 1709. He married Christian Ross in 1712; a few years after he had established himself as a wig-maker (not as a barber, as has been often said) in the High Street, and soon found himself in comfortable circumstances. They had six children. His eldest child was Allan Ramsay, the portrait painter. Sir Allan John Heppel Ramsay (19 October 1937 – 5 January 2022) was a British diplomat. Biography The son of Norman Ramsay Ramsay and wife Evelyn Faith Sorel- Cameron, Ramsay was educated at Bedford School and at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. At one point he also studied at Durham University. Ramsay was in the British Army from 1957 to 1970, serving in the Somerset Light Infantry until 1964, followed by two years in the Trucial Oman Scouts, and finally joining the Durham Light Infantry for the remainder of his service. He attended MECAS from 1968 to 1969 and then joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1970. He was British Ambassador to the Lebanon (1988–1990), British Ambassador to the Sudan (1990–1991) and British Ambassador to Morocco (1992–1996). Ramsay died at home in France on the 5 January 2022, at the age of 84. Allan Ramsay (born 1959, Edinburgh) is a painter. He was the winner of the 1988 John Player Portrait Award, subsequently known as the BP Portrait Award. Career Allan Ramsay attended figure drawing classes at Edinburgh College of Art between 1978 and 1982, then studied at the Glasgow School of Art from 1982 until 1986. He has also studied at the Art Students League in New York. In 1988 he was awarded first prize in the John Player Portrait Award / BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery (London). Major General Sir Alan Hollick Ramsay, (12 March 1895 – 19 September 1973) was an Australian educator and a senior officer in the Australian Army. Having served as an officer in the First World War, he commanded the 5th and 11th Divisions during the operations in New Britain and Bougainville respectively during the Second World War. Early life Born on 12 March 1895 in Windsor, Victoria, a suburb of Melbourne, Ramsay was the eldest of five children. He attended Melbourne Continuation (High) School, where he participated in the cadets. Upon completion of his education, Ramsay became a probationary teacher in 1912 for the Victorian Education Department.
