Agwamin Language
Wamin (also known as '' Agwamin'' or ''Ewamian'') is an Australian Aboriginal language of North Queensland spoken by the Ewamian people. Wamin was traditionally spoken in the Etheridge region, in the areas around Einasliegh, Georgetown, and Mount Surprise. Alternative names and dialects The language of Ewamian people, now undergoing revival, is variously known as Wamin or Agwamin. Elder Fred Fulford, as documented by Peter Sutton in the early 1970s, explained that Agwamin and Wamin were originally two mutually intelligible dialects, one 'heavy' and one 'light'. There was said to be one living speaker of the language alive in 1981. Dixon (2002) counts Wamin as an alternative name for Agwamin. Einasleigh, Queensland
Einasleigh is a town and a locality in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Einasleigh had a population of 92 people. Geography The town is located at the confluence of Einasleigh River with the Copperfield River. The Einasleigh River has a catchment area of . Following its confluence with the Gilbert River, they spill into a vast estuarine delta approximately wide that largely consists of tidal flats and mangrove swamps across the Gulf Country. Mount Surprise, Queensland
Mount Surprise is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Mount Surprise had a population of 169 people. Geography The town is located in the Gulf Savannah in Far North Queensland on the Gulf Developmental Road, north west of the state capital, Brisbane and west of the regional centre of Cairns. History The town was founded by Ezra Firth, from the English county of Yorkshire, who along with his family settled in the area in 1864. The property struggled at first; relations with the indigenous inhabitants of the country were hostile and the country was not suited for wool growing. The discovery of gold in the 1880s and the subsequent gold rush allowed Firth to sell his sheep to the miners, convert his holding to cattle and become wealthy selling goods to the miners. Georgetown is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Etheridge, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Georgetown had a population of 348 people. History Georgetown area may have been part of North America 1.7 billion years ago based on the characteristics of rocks found in Georgetown matching those of northern Canada rather than the rest of Australia. The Shire of Etheridge is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Australia in what is known as the Savannah Gulf region. Its economy is based on cattle grazing and mining. It covers an area of , and has existed as a local government entity since 1882. History The Einasleigh Division was created on 11 November 1879 as one of 74 divisions around Queensland under the ''Divisional Boards Act 1879'' with a population of 720. In 1891 it was reported that the divisional board had made no progress, perhaps because it covered a large area that was sparsely settled. The Indigenous languages of Australia number in the hundreds, the precise number being quite uncertain, although there is a range of estimates from a minimum of around 250 (using the technical definition of 'language' as non-mutually intelligible varieties) up to possibly 363.
