Admirable Class Minesweeper
The ''Admirable'' class was one of the largest and most successful classes of minesweepers ordered by the United States Navy during World War II. Typically, minesweepers detected and removed naval mines before the rest of the fleet arrived, thereby ensuring safe passage for the larger ships. They were also charged with anti-submarine warfare (ASW) duties with rear-mounted depth charge racks and a forward-firing Hedgehog antisubmarine mortar. Their job was essential to the safety and success of U.S. naval operations during World War II and the Korean War. These minesweepers were also employed as patrol vessel and convoy escorts. USS ''Admirable'' (AM-136) was the lead ship of her class of minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. In commission from 1943 to 1945, she was transferred to the Soviet Navy in 1945 and served as ''T-331'' until stricken in 1958. Construction and commissioning Originally classified as a "coastal minesweeper," AMc-113, ''Admirable'' was reclassified as a minesweeper, AM-136, on 21 February 1942. She was laid down on 8 April 1942 at Tampa, Florida, by the Tampa Shipbuilding Company. She was launched on 18 October 1942, sponsored by Mrs. Ann Pillsbury Fehr, daughter of Commander Horace W. Pillsbury, and commissioned on 20 April 1943. Admire is a city in Lyon County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 130. History Admire was founded in 1886. It was named for one of its founders, Jacob Admire. The first post office in Admire was established in November 1886. Admire was a station and shipping point on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. By the mid 1990s, rail service in Admire had been discontinued, and the tracks are now being used as a rail trail. Admire's current acting mayor is Robert Reust. ; born February 23, 2003) is a Japanese racehorse who won the 2007 Dubai Duty Free Stakes, Takarazuka Kinen and Japan Cup. Background Admire Moon was foaled on February 23rd, 2003 at Northern Farm in Abira, Hokkaido, Japan. He was bred by Katsumi Yoshida. He was sired by champion sire End Sweep and his dam was My Katies, a daughter of Sunday Silence. During the 2003 Japan Horse Racing Association Select Sale, Admire Moon was sold to Riichi Kondo for ¥16 million (roughly $135,000). He was trained by Ritto Training Center trainer Hiroyoshi Matsuda.
