''Ayo'' is the fifth studio album by Colombian band Bomba Estéreo, released on August 11, 2017. It is a cumbia album with elements of modern dance music and Spanglish lyrics. It reached number 28 on the US Top Latin Albums chart. Background and production The album was created following the band's success with the video for "Soy Yo", which was called an "anthem of Latinx identity" by NPR, and said to contain a "message of individuality and self-love". It also inspired art and Halloween costumes. ''Ayo'' was noted as following from this sound, being created soon after the viral reaction to the video. The band began working with producer Chris Castagno in order to compose a song with rhythm from a flauta de millo. This resulted in "Duele", the first song released from the album. Bomba Estéreo is a Colombian band founded in Bogotá in 2005 by Simón Mejía. Their music has been described as "electro tropical" or "psychedelic cumbia". History 2005–2008: Career beginning and ''Vol. 1'' The origins of the group go back to 2001 when Bogotá native Simón Mejía (previously a member of 1990s Colombian alternative rock band Charconautas) was part of a loose collective of musicians and visual artists under the name A.M. 770. Descemer Bueno (born July 5, 1971) is a Cuban singer, songwriter, and record producer. His first professional gigs were playing bass with Cuban troubadour Santiago Feliú. Early career Bueno studied music and became a music teacher before forming the jazz combo band Estado de Animo in 1990, which also included guitarist Elmer Ferrer and pianist Roberto Carcassés. Tamir Muskat () is an Israeli musician/producer-sound engineer who was born and raised in Petah Tikva, Israel as son of a Romanian immigrant. His father was the manager of Anzeagi Conservatorion for music in Petah Tikva. As a teenager, he was already a prominent rock drummer and percussionist. Ori Kaplan (; born October 1, 1969) is an Israeli jazz saxophonist and a music producer. He moved to the United States in 1991. He has worked with many artists including Shotnez Tom Abbs, Firewater (band), Firewater, Gogol Bordello, and Balkan Beat Box (of which he is a founding member). He is also known as DJ Shotnez. Career The first band that Kaplan played for was DXM, an underground sampler-driven group in Tel Aviv. He chose playing for DXM instead of taking clarinet lessons.
