The Atlanta Braves are an American professional baseball team based in the Atlanta metropolitan area. The Braves compete in Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member club of the National League (baseball), National League (NL) National League East, East Division. The club was founded in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings. The Braves are one of two remaining National League charter franchises that debuted in 1876 and are the oldest continuously operating Major professional sports teams in the United States and Canada, professional sports franchise in North America. The term "America's Team" is a nickname that refers to the National Football League (NFL)'s Dallas Cowboys. The nickname originated with the team's 1978 highlight film, where the narrator ( John Facenda) opens with the following introduction: The term is recognized and often used by media outlets, including ESPN, Yahoo!, HBO, and ''Sports Illustrated''. South End Grounds refers to any one of three baseball parks on one site in Boston, Massachusetts. They were home to the franchise that eventually became known as the History of the Boston Braves, Boston Braves, first in the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, National Association and later in the National League (baseball), National League, from 1871 through part of the 1914 season. Congress Street Grounds is a former baseball ground located in Boston, Massachusetts. The ballpark, as the name implies, was along Congress Street, near the intersection of Thompson Place, and not far from the Fort Point Channel on South Boston Flats, a newly filled in piece of land on Boston Harbor. The ground was home to the Boston Reds, that played in the Players' League in 1890 and the American Association in 1891. Although a short-lived facility, the ballpark witnessed some significant history. First, its occupants won league pennants in their two years of existence. Braves Field was a baseball park located in Boston, Massachusetts. Today the site is home to Nickerson Field on the campus of Boston University.
