Athletics At The 2020 Summer Paralympics
Para-athletics, Athletics at the 2020 Summer Paralympics were held in the Japan National Stadium (2019), National Stadium in Tokyo. There was 167 medal events: 93 for men, 73 for women and one mixed event. It was the largest contest of the Games programme regarding athlete numbers and medal events to be scheduled. The 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They kept the 2020 name and were instead held from 24 August to 5 September 2021. Classification and events Participating athletes are given a classification depending on their disabilities (T denotes track events, F denotes field events). Roman Pavlyk (; born 1 December 1983) is a Paralympic athlete from Ukraine. He has cerebral palsy and competes in T36 sprint and F36 long jump events. He competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China. There he won a gold medal in the men's – T36 event, a gold medal in the men's – T36 event and a silver medal in the men's – T36 event. At the 2012 Summer Paralympics he won gold medals in long jump and 200 metres events, and bronze in 100 m and 400 m races. He holds the long jump world record for F36 classified athletes. Markus Rehm
Markus Rehm (born 22 August 1988 in Göppingen, West Germany) is a German Paralympic athlete, and in the long jump has won four Paralympic, six world and five European titles. He began in sports at age 20 and became a long jump F44 world champion in 2011. His club is TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen and he is a medical specialist. Rehm is nicknamed "The Blade Jumper", as he is a long jumper with a blade-type leg prosthesis. Rehm's right leg was amputated below the knee after a wakeboarding accident. He uses a carbon-fibre bladed prosthesis, from which he jumps off. He holds the long jump world record in his category at 8.72m set in Rhede, Germany in June 2023, breaking his previous mark of 8.62 m set at the 2021 World Para Athletics European Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Léon Gabrial Schäfer (born 13 June 1997) is a German Paralympic athlete who competes in mainly sprinting and long jump events at international level events and is a current world record holder in the men's long jump T63. Ntando Mahlangu (born 26 January 2002) is a South African Paralympic athlete. He won the gold medal in both the men's long jump T63 and men's 200 metres T61 events at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan. Roderick Townsend-Roberts (born July 1, 1992) is an American Paralympic athlete. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics he set a high jump world record (2.15 m) and won gold in high jump, silver in long jump. Career He won the long jump and high jump events at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and 2015 Parapan American Games.
