Athletics At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Para-athletics, Athletics events at the 2016 Summer Paralympics were held in the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from September 2016. 177 events were held across both genders where 1,100 athletes competed. The athletics programme was the largest element of the Games programme in terms of entrants and medals awarded. Classification and events Athletes are given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows athletes to compete against others with a similar level of function. Najah Chouaya
Najah Chouaya (born January 10, 1988) is a Tunisian runner and Paralympic athlete. She won a silver medal for Tunisia at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in the Women's 1500 metres - T13. Biography Chouaya was born on January 10, 1988, in Gabes, Tunisia, with congenital blindness. Career 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships At the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in Assen, Chouaya participated in three events. On September 4, she competed the 200 metres in 27.12 seconds, placing sixth. On September 6, she came fourth in the 100 metres with a time of 13.42 seconds. Her final event was the 400 metre-race on September 8, where she placed eighth with a time of 59.92 seconds. 2016 Paralympic Games On September 10, 2016, Chouaya participated at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro as one of thirty-one athletes competing for Tunisia. Amanda McGrory
Amanda McGrory (born June 9, 1986) is an American wheelchair athlete. Biography McGrory graduated from Unionville High School in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. She attended the University of Illinois, graduating in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and in 2018 with a masters in information science. While an undergraduate she competed both in basketball and in track and field. McGrory earned four medals during the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China: gold in the 5000 meters, silver in the marathon, and bronze in both the 800 meters and the 4×100 meter relay. She won both the 2009 London and 2006 New York Marathon wheelchair races. She has also competed in the World Championships for Track and Field (2006, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017) and Marathon (2015), winning 10 medals over the years (3 gold, 3 silver, 4 bronze). Tatyana McFadden
Tatyana McFadden (; born April 21, 1989) is an American Paralympic athlete competing in the category T54. McFadden has won twenty-two Paralympic medals across multiple Summer and Winter Paralympic Games and the Laureus World Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability in 2015. Biography McFadden was born in Leningrad, then Soviet Union, on April 21, 1989. She was born with spina bifida, a congenital disorder that paralyzed her from the waist down. After her birth mother abandoned her in an orphanage that was too poor to afford a wheelchair for her, she walked on her hands for the first six years of her life. The doctors told her she was so sick that she had very little time to live. While in the orphanage, she met Deborah McFadden, who was visiting Russia as a commissioner of disabilities for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
