Athletics At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens was held at the Olympic Stadium on 20–22 August. Thirty-eight athletes from 27 nations competed. The event was won by Stefan Holm of Sweden, the nation's first victory in the men's high jump and first medal in the event since Patrik Sjöberg won three in a row from 1984 to 1992. Matt Hemingway took silver, returning the United States to the podium after a one-Games absence. Jaroslav Bába's bronze was the first medal in the event for the Czech Republic. Background This was the 25th appearance of the event, which is one of 12 athletics events to have been held at every Summer Olympics. Yaroslav Vladimirovich Rybakov (, born November 22, 1980, in Mogilyev, Soviet Union) is a retired Russian high jumper. He is the 2002 European Champion high jumper, and at the 2005 World Championships he shared the silver medal with Víctor Moya of Cuba. In 2006 he won the World Indoor Championships, and finished fifth in the high jump final at the 2006 European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg. The next year he won his third World Championships silver medal in a new personal best jump of 2.35 metres. In 2009, he finally won gold at the World Championships in Berlin. Alessandro Talotti (7 October 1980 – 16 May 2021) was an Italian high jumper. Biography Talotti finished fourth at the 2002 European Championships in Athletics and twelfth at the 2004 Olympic Games. He also competed at the 2003 World Championships, the 2005 European Indoor Championships, and the 2008 Olympic Games without reaching the final. Talotti was the Italian high jump champion in 2000 and 2004, out jumping Giulio Ciotti, Nicola Ciotti, and Andrea Bettinelli in those campaigns. Charles Allen Austin (born December 19, 1967) is an American former athlete who won the gold medal in the men's high jump at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2012.
