Athletics At The 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens was held at the Olympic Stadium on 21–23 August. It was originally planned to hold the discus throw at the Ancient Olympia Stadium, but it was discovered that the field was not large enough to accommodate the range of modern discus throwers, and would have posed a danger to spectators. As such, it was decided to move the discus throw and to hold the shot put at the ancient stadium, despite the fact that the shot put was not contested at the Ancient Olympic Games. Thirty-nine athletes from 26 nations competed. Hungary's Róbert Fazekas had initially finished first in the final but committed an anti-doping breach for failing to submit a proper urine sample during the drug test and was thereby not allowed to present his gold in the medal ceremony, resulting in his disqualification. Bud Houser
Lemuel Clarence "Bud" Houser (September 25, 1901 – October 1, 1994) was an American field athlete. He won Olympic gold medals in the discus throw in 1924 and 1928 and in the shot put in 1924. Jürgen Schult (; born 11 May 1960) is a German former track and field athlete and, from 1986 until 2024, the world record holder in the discus throw. Schult represented East Germany in the 1988 Olympic discus competition, where he won the gold medal. Dmitriy Igorievich Shevchenko (; born May 13, 1968, in Taganrog) is a Russian discus thrower who won silver medals at the World and European Championships. Despite this he did not throw past the 70 metres mark until 2002, when he achieved his personal best throw of 70.54 metres in Krasnodar. His three participations in the Olympics were all fruitless, especially the 2004 edition where he exited without any valid throws. He is a six-time national champion in the discus event. He missed the 1996 and 1997 seasons, due to a doping suspension. Michael Möllenbeck
Michael Friedrich Möllenbeck (12 December 1969 – 2 November 2022) was a German discus thrower. Möllenbeck's greatest achievements were two World Championship bronze medals, and his bronze at the 2005 World Championships was especially welcome as Germany struggled to win medals. His personal best throw was 67.64 metres, achieved in June 2002 in Dortmund. Jason Tunks (born May 7, 1975 in London, Ontario, Canada) is a Canadian former discus thrower who has represented Canada in the Olympics in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004. He currently holds the Canadian National Record for discus at . Competing for the SMU Mustangs track and field team, Tunks won the discus at the 1997 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Vasiliy Kaptyukh
Vasiliy Borisovich Kaptyukh (; ; born June 27, 1967, in Maladzyechna) is a Belarusian former discus thrower who won the Olympic bronze medal in 1996. He has in fact never won gold or silver medals in major competitions, and finished fourth in major contests such as the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, despite setting his personal best throw at the former, with 67.59 metres. His father Boris and aunt Vera Kaptyukh were also prominent athletes. He made his first international appearance at the 1985 European Athletics Junior Championships, where he finished third to win the discus bronze medal. He retired from international athletics in June 2010. His son, Roman Kaptyukh, was among the victims of the 2011 Minsk Metro bombing. |

Frantz Kruger (born 22 May 1975 in Kempton Park, South Africa) is a South African born Finnish discus thrower who won the Olympic bronze medal in 2000. He is also a double African champion.
