The athletics competition at the 2003 Pan American Games was held in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from Tuesday, August 5, to Saturday, August 9, 2003. Kenneth Brokenburr
Kenneth "Kenny" Brokenburr is a former American sprinter. He won an Olympic gold medal as part of the 4 × 100 meter relay team at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Early life Brokenburr was born on October 29, 1968, in Winter Haven, Florida. He grew up there and graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1987. After high school, Brokenburr matriculated to Wayland Baptist College in Plainview, Texas. There, as a sophomore in 1989, he became the NCAA Division II champion in the 200 meter dash. In 1991, this time as a senior for St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina, Brokenburr became the NCAA Division II champion in the 100 meter dash. After trying out for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, Brokenburr took a hiatus from running that lasted from 1993 to 1995. Michael Stember
Michael Stember (born January 30, 1978) is a track and field athlete from the United States who is known for his achievements in the middle distance events. His first international competition was winning the gold medal in the 1500 metres at the 1997 Pan American Junior Championships. He won a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games in the men's 1500 metres. He ran in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where he qualified for the semi-finals but finished a non-qualifying 9th. He returned to the 2003 Pan American Games and repeated his silver medal in the men's 1500 metres. In 2004 he became the U.S. Indoor 800 m champion. In 2007–2008 he was a volunteer coach at UCLA. 1500 Metres
The 1500 metres or 1500-metre run is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The event is closely associated with its slightly longer variant, the mile run, from which it derives its nickname "the metric mile". The demands of the race are similar to that of the 800 metre run, but with a slightly higher emphasis on aerobic endurance and a slightly lower sprint speed requirement. Fabiano Peçanha (born June 5, 1982 in Cruz Alta, Rio Grande do Sul) is a Brazilian middle distance runner. He is a quadruple South American champion in 800 metres and 1500 metres. 800 Metres
The 800 metres, or 800 meters (American and British English spelling differences#-re.2C -er, US spelling), is a common track running event. It is the shortest commonly run middle-distance running event. The 800 metres is run over two laps of an outdoor (400-metre) track and has been an Olympic event since the first modern games in 1896. During the winter track season the event is usually run by completing four laps of an indoor 200-metre track. The event was derived from the imperial measurement of a half mile (880 yards), a traditional British racing distance. 800 m is 4.67 m less than a half mile. The event combines aerobic system, aerobic endurance with anaerobic system, anaerobic conditioning and sprint speed, so the 800m athlete has to combine training for both. Alleyne Jeremy Francique (born June 7, 1976) is a retired Grenadian athlete who specialized in 400 metres, his personal best being 44.47 seconds set in 2004. He is the 400 m two-time world indoor champion in 2004 and 2006. He won his first world-level medal in 2003, when he finished third in the first World Athletics Final in 45.25 s. Mitchell "Mitch" Potter (born September 16, 1980) is a male American track and field athlete, who competes in the sprints events, primarily the 400 metres. He is best known for winning the men's 400 metres event at the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo. Early life Potter was born in St. Michael, Minnesota and attended St. Michael-Albertville High School. While in high school, he won five state Track and Field titles, and in August 2012 still held two state records in the Class A 300-meter hurdles and 4 X 400 meter relay.
