Athletics At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Men's High Jump
The men's high jump competition at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, had an entry list of 27 competitors from 18 nations, with two qualifying groups (27 jumpers) before the final (16) took place on Sunday September 25, 1988. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. There were two bronze medals awarded. The event was won by Hennadiy Avdyeyenko of the Soviet Union, the nation's first victory in the men's high jump since 1972 and fourth overall. Hollis Conway's silver returned the United States to the podium after a two-Games absence (boycotted in 1980; best place was fourth in 1984) that had disrupted the American streak of medaling in every Olympic men's high jump. Olympic Stadium (Seoul)
The Seoul Olympic Stadium (), a.k.a. Jamsil Olympic Stadium (formerly romanised as ''Chamshil''), is a multi-purpose stadium in Seoul, South Korea. It is the main stadium built for the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1986 Asian Games, 10th Asian Games in 1986. It is the centrepiece of the Seoul Sports Complex in the Songpa District, in the southeast of the city south of the Han River (Korea), Han River. It is the largest stadium in South Korea. Gerd Wessig
Gerd Wessig (, ; born 16 July 1959 in Lübz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) is a former East German high jumper who won the gold medal in the 1980 Summer Olympics, the first man ever to set a world record in the high jump at the Olympics. Early life Wessig, a professional chef, trained with the SC Traktor Schwerin under trainer Bernd Jahn. He attended the John Brinckmann School in Goldberg. Wessig was 2.01 metres tall and, while he was competing, weighed 88 kilograms (6' 7", 194 lbs). Luca Toso
Luca Toso (born 15 February 1964) is a former Italian high jumper. He won two medals at the International athletics competitions. Biography He finished tenth at the 1983 World Championships and the 1985 World Indoor Games, thirteenth at the 1988 Olympic Games and eighth at the 1990 European Championships. At the Mediterranean Games he won silver medals in 1987 and 1991. He also competed at the 1987 World Championships without reaching the final. Because of these results, Luca Toso was almost always punctual at the major international events in which he participated, hitting the final on five out of six occasions (two world championships, two Europeans and one Olympics), failing to make an appointment only for the 1987 outdoor world championships. Brian E. Stanton (born February 19, 1961) is an American high jumper who competed at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Biography Stanton finished second behind Canadian Milt Ottey in the high jump event at the British 1985 AAA Championships. He represented his home country in the men's high jump event at the 1988 Olympic Games, where he finished 11th in the final, jumping 2.31m. He also jumped his personal record of 2.34m that same year. Dalton Grant (born 8 April 1966) is a former high jumper. Athletics career Grant won a total number of four national titles for Great Britain (AAA Championships) in the men's high jump event. His personal best jump is 2.36 metres, achieved at the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo. He has a personal indoor best of 2.37 metres. Grant appeared at five consecutive Commonwealth Games. He represented England in the high jump, at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. Clarence Nicholas Saunders (born 14 September 1963) is a retired Bermuda, Bermudian high jumper. He won a bronze medal at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and finished fifth at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Competing for the Boston University Terriers track and field program, Saunders won the 1984 high jump at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships with a mark of 2.27 metres. In 1989 he held the List of Commonwealth Games records in athletics, Commonwealth record with 2.34 metres, but this was equalled by Dalton Grant.
