Athletics At The 1984 Summer Olympics – Men's Triple Jump
The men's triple jump event at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California had an entry list of 28 competitors, with two qualifying groups (28 jumpers) before the final (12) took place on August 4, 1984. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The top twelve and ties, and all those reaching 16.60 metres advanced to the final. The event was won by Al Joyner of the United States, the nation's first title in the men's long jump since 1904 and fourth overall. Mike Conley Sr., also an American, took silver. Keith Connor's bronze was Great Britain's first medal in the event since 1908. The Soviet boycott broke that nation's four-Games gold medal and eight-Games podium streaks. Steven George Hanna (Birth date: 30 October 1958 in Nassau, Bahamas) is a Bahamian triple jumper who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics and in the 1988 Summer Olympics. He won a silver medal in the long jump at the 1982 Commonwealth Games, and at the same games finished fourth in the triple jump. William Augustus Banks III (born March 11, 1956) is an American athlete. Born at Travis Air Force Base, California, he grew up in San Diego County and went to Oceanside High School. Banks is an Eagle Scout. Track and Field Banks was a track & field athlete competing in the triple jump. On June 16, 1985 he set a world record of 17.97 m (58 feet 11.5 inches) at the national championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. He finished second in the NCAA Championships in 1977 and 1978. Joseph Taiwo (born 24 August 1959) is a retired Nigerian athlete who competed in the triple jump at the 1984 Summer Olympics and the 1988 Summer Olympics. John Alun Adolphus Herbert (born 20 April 1962) is an English former sportsperson, who represented Great Britain as both a triple jumper and bobsleigh. Competing in athletics, he won the gold medal for England in the triple jump at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh.
