Athletics At The 1972 Summer Olympics – Men's Shot Put
The men's shot put field event at the 1972 Olympic Games took place on September 8 & 9. Twenty-nine athletes from 19 nations competed. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The East German throwers were expected to pose a big challenge in these games, as well as the throwers from Poland. Brian Oldfield from the United States was the first person to use a new technique, a technique that is similar to the discus throwing style. The thrower uses a rotational spin before releasing the shot put. The event was won by Władysław Komar of Poland, the nation's first medal in the men's shot put. It was the first time since World War II that an American had not won; George Woods had the best result for the United States with silver. Lahcen Samsam Akka (born 14 June 1942) is a Moroccan shot putter. He competed in the men's shot put at the 1964 Summer Olympics and the 1972 Summer Olympics. Samsam pursued his studies and athletic career in the United States, starting at Oregon State University, where he earned a Academic degree, degree in soil chemistry in the mid-1960s. After returning to Morocco to work in a Laboratory, lab, he found the sedentary Lifestyle (social sciences), lifestyle unbearable and decided to go back to the USA to pursue a master's degree at San Jose State University. Samsam's birthdate is recorded as 14 June 1942, in the 1964 Summer Olympics, 1964 Olympic entry lists and as simply 1945 in the 1972 Summer Olympics, 1972 lists. Seppo Simola
Seppo Antero Simola (27 July 1936 in Somero - 9 March 2003) was a Finnish shot putter, who represented Turun Riento, weighing in at 128 kg and standing 191 cm tall. He competed in the men's shot put at the 1972 Summer Olympics. He was the first Finn to put the shot more than 20 m in an official competition when he put it 20.15 metres in Turku, Finland on 19 July 1972; this was of course his personal best and a national record. Even though Simola was a five-time Finnish champion outdoors and three-time champion indoors, he never placed higher than 16th in the Olympics and 11th in the European Championships. Jaroslav Brabec
Jaroslav Brabec (27 July 1949 – 20 May 2018) was a Czech track and field athlete who competed in the shot put. He twice represented Czechoslovakia at the Summer Olympics (1972 and 1976). He was a three-time participant at the European Athletics Championships (1971, 1974 and 1978) and a three-time medallist at the European Athletics Indoor Championships, being the champion at the 1973 edition. Al Feuerbach
Allan "Al" Dean Feuerbach (born January 14, 1948) is a former American track and field athlete. He competed in the shot put at the 1972 and 1976 Olympics and finished in fifth and fourth place, respectively. He missed the 1980 Games due to the boycott by the United States. He did however receive one of 461 Congressional Gold Medals created especially for the athletes. On May 5, 1973, he broke Randy Matson's seven-year-old world record in the shot put by throwing 21.82 meters (71' 7") at the San Jose Invitational at San Jose State College.
